Agreed - I don't and frankly had never heard of him or plenty of other cyclists in history. Too bad it had to go down that road when this was really about identifying the bike the OP just picked up.

I look forward to more info as to what this might be.

I replied like that because I was replying more to the photo and the implication I was mocking the Godfather's son (or brother depending on the specific movie).

I was not fortunate enough to know Alfredo Binda but friends and riding companions did. You cannot begin to imagine how that man was loved.

The majority of your post is detailed and had you left out the last three words I would have emailed you back and said "Wow, and he must have been a hell of a guy". Had you replied you thought anything negative about my comment I would have said sorry and no intent to offend and thanks for the info because everyone can use new info, especially me. When I joined BF I was posting what had to be some seriously mundane questions and I still do. As to the last three words, did you mean this is the C&V forum and he should know who this man Binda is and what he did ! Was it a comment about the lack of knoweldge in the C&V world in general?. I like bikes to ride and fix up and I like the people I meet who are into bikes and biking and there are a lot of them on here. However I am focused on road bikes and not mountain bikes or muscle bikes. Last year at the Canadian Vintage Bike Show I talked with a man who figured he had spent more than $30,000 on BMX bikes. I asked if he was joking and he laughed and said that if I only knew how much money changed hands on those bikes I probably fall down. He was right, I didn't know then and I still don't now. The top of Classic and Vintage forum (on my screen) shows: "Classic & Vintage This forum is to discuss the many aspects of classic and vintage bicycles, including musclebikes, lightweights, middleweights, hi-wheelers, bone-shakers, safety bikes and much more." I have only heard of the toe clip straps.

For what it's worth it was 10pm on Friday and I had had a very long day. I was posting pictures and offering what I had in the hope that someone on here could educate me on what I had found. Clearly I was in a rush because if I had stopped to think I would have remembered that components may help dating a frame but don't in themselves identify it. On a separate thread I posted a second bike and in that thread I have said that the PO was a packrat with some really nice stuff stored alongside complete junk and that "I had only a bit of time to process everything I saw". There were gold pedals straps in boxes in that basement. Didn't recognize the company and could have got them for cheap but I was fast running broke.

The key word here is educate. I was looking for info.

Perhaps I could have stopped to look up the more rare and obscure company names I saw in that man's basement. I didn't because I need to get some sleep. I didn't look that man's name up (Binda) and if you were hurt I am sorry for the offence that you felt I was giving. I live around the corner from the home where Steve Bauer grew up. Steve raced in the Tour de France and later had a bike manufacturing business. I have seen comments made by people that they wouldn't buy a Bauer bike because that was a skate manufacturer. Wrong company, they were confusing his business with Bauer.com. Not my place to complain so I don't. I think I have offered information one time and then a comment was made about a South African Armstrong bike I had listed for sale on CL and someone thought it was a bike that was given away by (IIRC) a parts store and I said that no, I thought it was a Raleigh Record made in SA by Raleigh through a proxy to circumvent the sanctions against trading with SA. A few years back I knew that Campagnolo was a company. I didn't know there was a man named Campagnolo who had raced bikes because it wasn't something I had thought of. I have pedals with Christopher pedal straps. Who was Christopher? I just googled "Who makes Christopher pedal straps?". No luck (I think they are marketed by Zefal but not sure who started that company).

Imagine you walked into a baseball forum and had simply never heard of Babe Ruth. And then said something completely off the wall. It would not go over well.

This is a place where people who worked in rural American bike shops in the 70s and 80s invented the sport da capo. And have no respect whatever for anything that preceded their involvement. No interest in anything that preceded their involvement.

The name you want is Eugène Christophe. No final 'r'. Get the names right. It is insulting, anywhere but here, to mangle another persons name.

Bertinjim advised he thought that the forks were a replacement so I called seller and she gave me the 2nd fork this morning, so now, does anyone recognize it?

1st photos show details on forks mounted now. I agree they don't match the frame

Sorry - 2nd fork measured 26.3mm (I think that the measurement may boff due to blasting/repaint but can't seem to find what a PX 10 had.

Internet keeps dying.

Any markings on the steerer tubes? Have you been able to determine if the frame was a repaint? Maybe from the seller?

I was bothered by that as well. Even if the shifter bosses were brazed on, the band stop would have/should have been centered. I wondered if it was a factory error or if a frame builder created this frame and used a tube with a stop on and didn't notice the stop until it was too late.
No the shifter band stop is on the side because Campy bands were diamond shaped in the middle so the point of a diamond did not sit well right above a small stop. They were intentionally brazed to one side although usually under the down tube and not on top of one. Sometimes band stops were made like a V so they could be placed in the center of the frame. This frame has obviously been repainted and I am surprised they didn't file off that stop before repainting it. Back in the 70's and 80's it was common to get a steel frame repainted every 3 to 5 years and have braze-ons changed at the same time.

Well IMHO the "original" fork could well have been a match stylistically, take a look at a Holdsworth with similar "Italianate" headlugs, full wrap-over rear cluster and have full sloping (British) fork crowns. But in this case it's moot since chances are very slim there would be a fork with Tange ends mated to a frame with Campy vertical DOs, so the "2nd fork" is most likely the original (Unless THAT was swapped earlier, but...). As to the maker: doubt that there could be an Allegro connection since Allegro would certainly be Metric 531, and the wrap-over for those have more pronounced edges plus the very distinctive serial number "ingot" brazed on the seat tube. Agree it's likely Brit and seeing the rear view of the seat cluster I'd also say not likely a Holdsworth either...I don't have a good guess!

Moderators - If there are double posts, sorry but internet keeps going down due to high winds.

No markings whatsoever on 2nd fork. Possibly some were there originally but now destroyed by sanding or sand blasting? Forks shows signs of use but very light use.

Seller passed in the fall from cancer and now estate clearing it all out. I am 2nd onlist for leftovers and there were some Christophe - not Christoper! - pedals either new or NOS. I misspelt earlier because I typed have some but meant had a set of Christophe straps that came with AlAn but they are long given away so no refence when looking the name up. Boxes of bearings, old narrow style road bars and lots of junk. There were even a set of NOS gold toe clips, still in the box. Also a Bianchi frame that may or may not trickle my way. I have to respect the lady running things. She wouldn't budge and give me anything until 1st person looks at the pile and says yes or no, and much as I wanted to dig in this morning it's the right call.

I'd like one last chance to id this frame.

I think it's a very nice frame but might have to ask on appraisals for value. It doesn't fit so I will pass on but unsure how to describe it and might list on here as "unknown maker - possibly/probably British" which I don't think does it justice as it's a really really nice old frame that is super light.

I tore it down and cleaned it.



It has the cable lugs brazed on under the BB





I believe these are the original forks as they have similar lugs as the frame



A comparison of the forks which were on as bought (on left) and the forks that I believe are the originals (on right).
I think the design with two holes on the underneath brazing might be distinctive. The spare fork is a bit more ornate.
Since it doesn't fit I will move it along and I guess best to offer both forks when selling as package deal?




Any ideas as to who made it if it isn't Holdsworth??

Is it there to strengthen the forks? On the left one the piece with the three holes, it looks to be part of the crown whereas on the fork on the right the piece with two holes looks like an add on that is brazed to the forks.

Not really sure if they add any strength to the fork legs, or if they are mostly just there as a "garnish"....
BTW, I suspect that both of those tabs were added on and not part of the crown. At least, that is what I've always seen. The one that looks one piece might just have better/ cleaner brazing that filled the gap and made it look like it is part of the crown.

Those are reinforcements or tangs or braze-ons. They were welded to the crown to provide true lateral reinforcement before the blades were brazed to the crown. Often, they were just brazed to the fork blade during the assembly of the fork.The frameset may actually be a custom or a self build from a frame course. The chisel shaped front and rear dropout ends are the same in design and the wrapover stay caps and the bottom bracket cable tunnels show a lot of work that would have been "productionized" out of a commercially made frameset. Another indicator of the a possible custom origin is the imperfect file work on the crown and the uniform filing off or filling of dropout labels. Very interesting frameset.

@WGB got me looking at this thread after I did some other ID work on another probably-British bike, strangely disguised as a Pogliaghi. I figured I should put my ID here so as to enrich the internet community.

You know what this bike really looks like?! BRIAN ROURKE.

I think that's our man. The way the wrap over stays are flattened lightly where they go over the seat lug, but also mitered and fileted into the seat cluster as they pass it. It's so Rourke. And I have seen at least one of his frames with the Campy vertical drops. And the angular "factory style" way in which the tubes are attached to the dropouts is something Rourke did pretty consistently.

I thought it was a Phillips at first, but they were higher-volume and wouldn't have wasted time on all that flattening and mitering to perfect the wrapover. Plus I've never seen one with vertical drops.

Anyway, sorry for the zombie thread. Maybe this will help someone else in the future.
