So excited about my purchase today!

Picked up a 1995 Univega Alpina 501 for $95! Appears to be all original and in excellent shape. Original tires as well. I can't wait to convert this to a drop bar touring bike/bikepacking bike. I have been looking for one of these for a while. I collect Univegas and have a number of the road bikes.

Cool bike! I like how the front end has a bit of lift to it. Some of those late 80s and 90s mtbs have really short headtubes and place the handlebars fairly low, which makes getting an even bar/saddle height challenging, if that's what you're after.

What is 969 tubing? I'm assuming that was built by Miyata for Univega? Or was Univega using someone else to build their frames by '95?

I wish I knew. There is a sticker that says "Made in Taiwan" on it. I do know that in 1996 Univega sold to Raleigh. Here is a pic of the serial on the bb. The 969 Tubing means 9mm at the ends of the tubing and 6mm between. Double butted.

Hmmm. Lugless TIG welded. Maybe Giant built it.

That is what I was thinking too. And the Serial # starts with a "G"

Cool bike! STX on the rear, I have that group on my Trek. Some look down on it but it’s a good performer. Crank is making me wonder if it’s one of the recall items?

look forward to the change out to drop bar.

Good deal on a great solid bike! Take that thing out and thrash it in the ST’s!

I have an ‘84 Alpina Uno that a friend gave me.

Not really special tubing, but respectable.

My wife had one of those, except it was I think, a ‘92. It was pinkish/purple color. Great bike that lasted well until I started using it as a MTB polo bike. That sport, at least the way we played it, is very hard on a bike.

Great looking Univega. Can't wait to see the pics of the build. I'd love a nice Univega MTB but from just before they MaxMudroom stays.
