650 B wheels on early 90 Schwinn bikes

I rently was told that during a period of time in the early 90's some models of Schwinn mountain bikes and hybrids had 650b Wheels vs 26" wheels. It had something to do with a trade embargo with China. Any truth to this, or does anyone have more information. THX!

I think I've seen someone mention this somewhere, a thread where someone said they used a 650b wheel off of a Schwinn to test fit on another frame. Not sure though.

EDIT:
Found this thread with a quick google search: Schwinn Mirada w/ 650B wheels
Quotes from the thread:
"1991 only. Miradas and Frontiers came with the oddball 26 x 1-1/2" tires. Not really sure why they did that..."
"I have read both that it was to avoid import duties on the larger tires and that it was simply a specification error by a nameless engineer (fraction versus decimal). I have my doubts about either story, but I do have a mid-1980s Raleigh Grand Mesa with stock aluminum 650Bs (the online specs for 1985 say 26 X 1.5 steel rims, however). Raleigh also sold the much better equipped Tamarack with 650Bs."

I have seen take-off 650b wheelsets from Raleigh Tamaracks on eBay. Suzue "Sealed Bearing" hubs, nutted axles, with Araya rims.

About same time as that 1991 Mirada I had conversations with engineers and managers at Schwinn who were vey clear MTB would be leaving 559 wheels behind. And they test rode my Bianchi Project 7.

1991 Schwinn with 650b tires.

Hello my name is Rick I like older bikes pre 2000 ones. Anyway i have 5 Schwinns out of my 7 bikes I own. 3 of them were made in the nineties., 1991 and 1996 Schwinn Suburban 3 speeds., and a 1999 Schwinn Searcher 21 speed. The 1991 has 26 x 1 1/2 inch tires(40 x 584) 650b tires on 26 x 1.5 inch rims my 96 has 26 x 1.75 ( 44 x 559) my research from online catalogs shows the Suburban 3 speeds used the 650b tires though 94 then switched to the mtb size tires. Also nobody knows about a Suburban models in the 90s my 96 was bought new from a lbs and the 91 has a lbs sticker on it as well. 4 of my 5 schwinns are LBS bikes with the other one, a 2014 model from Target bought used from CL last year for my wife.

Sorry to run one but hope this helps.
