A Miyata 1000! And a 610! I rather like my 210, which is the bottom of the Grand Touring range (and still quite nice!) but would commit heinous crimes to obtain a 610 or 1000...

my dad has passed this bike on to me. he bought it at a local bike shop and they said it was a fairly expensive bike at one time and sold it for a pretty good price(they probably upgraded some of the components).

yep, thats the place
Definitely seems like a good place with good people, dad always has good things to say about them. Ive only been there once but he buys things there fairly often, most recently a trek road bike.(which is why he let me have the miyata)

The name Koga stems from the Dutch businessman that started this: Andries Gaastra, the 'Ko' is from the first letters of his wife's last name. Andries Gaastra is the son of ... Gaastra, who founded Batavus. Somewhere on the internet you can find the whole story. It would help if you could read Dutch!

I recently picked up a 712 at a bike swap and would like to know the year. It is mostly white with red forks. It has all 105 components, 7 speed index on the downtube and has the rear brake cable inside the top tube. Anyone?

Hi--
I'm trying to track down some info on my old bike that just got stolen. I think it was a 710. It was red with gold accents (I think) and an 18-speed. The insurance co. would love some answers.
Thanks,
scottmillerssu

Miyata seven ten question...
I have read the threads here and it is neat to see how much is known on the bike I just bought. I am a little curious if anyone can tell me a little about my new (to me) bike. It is a Miyata seven ten, red with silver letters, black trim around letters. The number under the crank (I am hopeing is the serial number?) is 0g74936. It has the Mangalight forks and it is triple butted.
I noticed most of the other bikes mentioned are from the 80's. This one looks like it was very well taken care of or it is newer than that. The tires are worn out and the chain a tiny bit rusty but the paint and stickers look pretty new. I paid $5.00 for it. (Thrift store on base) Can anyone tell me what it is worth? (My wife is mad at me for buying another bike... I am not going to sell it. I like it alot. Just curious, Thanks!)
Thanks to all that have posted so far. It is interesting reading!

The serial suggests it is a 1986, which is also the best match for your description. However, it is not a perfect match, as the spec'd fork material is CrMo not Mangalight. The 1985 did use the Mangalight forks, but had black lettering insteasd of silver. If the brake cables are routed under the handlebar tape, then it is a 1986.
At that price, you would have been foolish not to buy it. I don't have the price for that year, but based on comparable models, original cost would have been in the $400-450 US range. Ask your wife if she could have resisted that type of bargain!

The 710 was one of Miyata's high end models with only the 912 in a road bike being the highest. If the bike was well taken care of as you have noted then you have a real Japanese gem and for $5. Miyata's was argueably the best Japanese bike company in Japan with one of the worlds foremost framebuilder working for them; unfortunately the public hasn't caught on to their value so on the market your bike in used condition is worth about $350 if in excellent condition with the original components.

The 1000 was very similar, it had slightly better componentry and a better front fork.

When I first discovered this forum, there were not very many postings about Miyata, but now they are coming out of the woodwork! I have a burgandy 310 that I bought new from Stone's in Alameda in 1984. The only thing that I have changed is the seat to an Avocet Touring II. I wouldn't think of selling it, but I wouldn't mind having a touring model like a 610 to go with it.

This is my Seven Ten, I'm head over heels in love with her and I've been told it's a 1981 model.

Funny that this thread should come back to life as I picked up a Seven Ten frameset today. Looks like it's perhaps a 1986 or '87 from the info from T-Mar in this thread (serial #N059645). Quite racey geometry; just the thing to set up as a fixed gear and sell to a college kid.
