Formula One & E motor Sports is all over Carbon Composites , NASCAR & SCCA is not.. I still like the obvious craftsmanship of a hand made steel bike frame , lugwork as jewelry, though accept the TIG welding as a good way to get the joints made... I own a Carbon Fiber A5 mandolin made by Clear Carbon and Peter Mix.. here is an example : http://mandolinbros.blob.core.window...llery/1202.jpg |

Nope,. it stays in tune for days, in spite of humidity and temperature changes that causes wood to swell & contract and can be kept in the boot on a summer day.. The perfect one to have on my next Irish Bike and pub session sit in and play along , tour.. |
For you guys complaining about a lack of modern steel, here's a new steel Motobecane for (just) under $800, with Shimano 105 11 speed drivetrain.

I too am over the carbon hype. I get a kick out of all the cyclists here that are so excited about their new light weight carbon bikes and all they ever ride is the flats. An overpass is a"huge" hill.
|
Current MTB in carbon are awesome. Odd to say but today's mtn bikes, super capable they are but HEFTY. Reducing weight with carbon greatly helps but also an isolator for harsher hardtails. I'm sold.

I've had a favorite steel frame bike break out with rust (probably from my own sweat) and I didn't like it. I had the frame bead blasted and I rattle can painted it, but it was never the same.
Now I go with carbon frame (over built, not much lighter than steel, but strong) on my adventure road touring bike or aluminum frame with carbon fork and carbon handlebars on my bikepacking 29er plus bike. I still have several steel frame bikes, but I'm careful about getting them wet. Or sweating on them. The last steel bike I bought died when I was rear ended, on the way back home from a bike ride. I took that as a sign. My carbon Adventure bike survived a gravel road crash/ slide with no problems. It feels so great when I ride, as does my bikepacking bike. Steel was great back in the day, but it eventually rusts. That's my only complaint. Aluminum and carbon don't rust and can be just as comfortable. |
$$$$$vs fat
Why pay $6,000 to take 6 pounds off your bike, when you can take 6 pounds off yourself for free?
|
Steel bikes began, to move lucky man, across the planet more able.
Aluminum came, and caused some to blame, the beer can, thicker, gone mobile. And then came the rosin, with fibers impregnate, as light as a frame made of paper. With wheels soon to follow, and progress to swallow, and headsets made in a taper. The curmudgeons did gather, in pious old lather, to bemoan the advancement of time. With stubborn chagrin, they, reluctant, gave in, and drowned all their sorrows with wine. Trolls danced about, with carbon, without, to relish said downfall with peeps. We sent them back home, to their ma's basement, alone, to go back to a life being creeps. :fred: |
Then there came Robbie who spun poems 'bout his hobby and took many criers to task..
Was it steel or be carbon or some similar jargon, oh hell, just pass us the flask. |
Oh what the hey, i just want to play, so i got something new and fancy. Im old and I'm tired and no longer buffy, so all I really need is a Huffy?

I'm old and I'm tired and no longer buffy, so all I really need is a Huffy? As we struggle to find some resemblance Of normalcy, with what we used to see, but the angles are now inconsistent. I can't rhyme any more, so I'll stop keeping score. Of the changes in the equipment's substance. Best I can do on 3 cups of coffee. |
There is this really great place were the membership does grace, exotic steel bikes o'plenty.
Some of them have not just one bike , but some as many as twenty. They like to make fun of Carbon Fiber bikes, and say there goes a fool with his money. |

Is it just me, or has with bike industry gone a little too far on the carbon fiber hype cycle. So first off, I am biased against carbon fiber bikes because I think they look kinda weird. And I have no speed aspirations, or race aspirations so it is way outside what I need or want.
But the biggest issue I have at the moment is that bike consumers have been brainwashed into thinking the carbon is the best thing since sliced bread for every bike purpose. "Hi, I am choosing between 2 commuter bikes. One feels really great and holds all my stuff, but it is steel. The other bike is 2X more, doesn't hold my stuff, and doesn't fit. The carbon bike is nicer so I should get it right? I can compromise on the fit so I can get carbon? Carbon rules!" Or of course the carbon fiber bottle cages for crusing around town - gotta save 10 grams, even though a full water bottle will outweigh any of those gram savings. Is there a carbon fiber bell yet? Because if you bike doesn't have 100% carbon components, it sucks. Is anyone else over the carbon fiber hype machine? When ever I am on the bike trail, and I hear a CF bike coming down the trail, it seriously reminds me of the sound of another kind of bike, from my youth.....something about the sound of hollow plastic on a concrete sidewalk.....true story! :50: .https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...9cd5ee2019.jpg |
OMG..
Not even cars had plastic when I was a tyke on a trike!:( |

I think the triathlete Mark Allen was quoted as saying the same about $2,000 for 2 lbs. One year, all my bikes lost 35 lbs. It was a great year. |

Because some people will lose the weight AND buy the bike. Now its a net of 12 less pounds for $6000. Oh boy- thats a steal compared to only 6 for $6k!! really though- many people enjoy the newest and latest. For road bikes, that means DI2 shifting on a carbon frame with built in suspension to the stays or stem along with a carbon cockpit and wheels that sound like angry bees. Ok cool then. Whatever floats your boat. |
No issues with the madness.
I know folks with bass boats who don't catch much...as if they even wanted to. I bought my dad some Pings, and he carried them and never, ever broke 100. Hunters with Belgian Brownings, weekend campers with Airstreams behind King Ranch duallys. I know my bike dollar is wretched excess . I'll fix that one day. |
