Help finding/choosing ARAYA rims for 80's resto.

Hi there,

Im restoring my mums old Sid Standard 'Superbe' frame that was built in Nottingham, 1981. It's always been a lightweight touring bike, but got butchered by many LBS and now only has a few original parts known or remaining. The original parts seemed to be high end japanese parts.

- Tange headset and bottom bracket
- SR royal seatpost and handlebar stem/bars
- Suntour superbe pro hubs (not THE original ones but knew this is what they were so have sourced new ones)

Ive gone with the drilled SR royal drilled crankset and Suntour Superbe derailers to keep with the existing sets.

Im thinking to build the Superbe 36h hubs onto ARAYA rims, but struggling to find any that seem right available in europe, and also Im not that confident about which are most fitting for this restoration. How is 26" x 1.5? Considerably more friction than going with narrow 700cc setup? Have no experience with wider tyres.

Any advice on which ARAYA model to look for and where to find them would be great! and general advice about the project.

Tubulars? The Araya Aero (ADX) series were available then.
The Aero2 are wider, more appropriate for a touring bent.

Contact Ron Boi at RRB cycles. He has an assortment of ADX-1 in stock.

Or use Araya 16B. Continuously in production for over 60 years now. Available from various vendors of NJS track parts.

If seeking Araya clinchers that is very hard. Best bet would be to scour for complete bikes with OEM rims and low miles.

Thanks for replies. Gonna look into the ADX-1 at RRB, thanks for that!

Ive avoided tubulars up until now... always heard they are super troublesome. Maybe its time to try them out though, if I fail to find suitable clinchers.

This might be totally ridiculous, but Ive found a very reasonably priced pair of the RM-20, which I know are for mtb but was thinking of fitting 1.5" panaracers on it? Thoughts?ARAYA RM-20 36H PAIR 559 / 26" ba1 retro MTB


edit* ive actually found a thread that says its possible, someone did it on a commuter bike... I guess im worried its a total fudge for what im hoping to be a nice restoration... ?

Tubulars have come a long way. Many fewer flats. Gluing and patching have not changed. Much of the trouble in the old days was caused by overinflating the cheaper tires, lower pressures currently in fashion are much easier on the casings. Still sink or swim, all or nothing.

In clinchers, the Araya 20A was available at that time, too. I've been really impressed with the examples I've ridden.

Araya RM-20 rims are moderately narrow for "mountain bike" rims, which makes them a good match to 1.5" tires. I had a Gary Fisher mountain bike that I built with similar width rims and Tioga City Slicker tires. It was a surprisingly quick setup.
