Colnago with Campy components questions.
Ten years ago, I purchased a 1984 Colnago Nuovo Mexico. My first question concerns the free wheel. Both hubs, front and rear wheel, are Campy Super Record hubs. What's weird is that the free wheel is a six cog Dura Ace free wheel. Probably not original equipment, but aren't Campy and Shimano components non-compatible? It has worked fine over the past decade. What's going on here? The second question concerns the chain which I want to replace. What chain should I choose?

Freewheels are interchangeable as long as the threading matches: i.e. French threaded hub needs a French threaded freewheel, etc.

For a chain, get an 8-speed chain from KMC or Sram.

It doesn't matter for friction, most anything goes. Early index systems is where things got complicated.

For freewheels, there are apparently a few common threadings.

Italian 1.378" x 24 tpi 35 x 1.058 mm
ISO 1.375" x 24 tpi 34.92 x 1.058 mm
British 1.370" x 24 tpi 34.80 x 1.058 mm
French 1.366" x 25.4 tpi 34.7 x 1 mm

In general, the Italian, ISO, and British are "close enough", although running an old British freewheel on an Italian hub could be tight.

The French is different enough that it is a problem.

By the mid 80's, it is possible that Campagnolo was moving towards the ISO standard.

Dura Ace freewheels are some of the nicer ones around and you will find them used often on all kinds of friction shift racing setups. Get an 8 speed KMC or SRAM chain for < $15 and you’re good to go.
