EMC built mostly "heavy" frames (Eddy paid more attention to frame strength than light weight), so the difference between the 3-Athlete and Corsa is not much.

Well, there's going to be another "Molteni" on the road in a little bit - I also prefer the other paint colors!

so is it a resprayed 3 athlete with a corsa decal or not sure which? I've always enjoyed riding it! |
It was sold to me a few years back by a well known uk vintage biker dealer as Columbus SL probably SLX...

"well known vintage biker dealers" from all over the world have EMC frames incorrectly described in most cases - it's not (mostly) bad will just lack of sources.

I pulled the trigger and can't wait for this frame to arrive. I'm considering to paint this (if the paint is really bad) to Molteni colorway. Do you have recommendation on where to see the details of the Molteni colorway? Like the orange color code and etc. |
Molteni on "thick tubes" Mx Leader
looks ...unconventional :) I would not worry too much about the orange shade, in team Molteni at least 2 shades were used, in EMC probably also 2 - the important thing is that it was not a very dark yellow or tomato red :) |

It does look good on Molteni MX-Leader reissue, on 2004 if I'm not mistaken?
Still contemplating though for the repaint. We'll see after the bike arrived :) |
Yes, there were even alu frames sold in Molteni colors....
This is not a D D1, behind the 1 you can clearly see the 2 - so we have a D D12 which is a beautiful Corsa Extra from late 1991 in Weinmann 91 colors built with unknown tubes... I would look at the markings on steering tubes if I were you. |

I liked RAL 2003, put it into google and 20 samples in different shades popped up on my screen - I give up....
Take a look at photos of original Molteni, choose the nicest shade, print a photo and go to the paint shop - they will match the paint (or at least show you the closest equivalent in some system). I can't think of anything else |

Avoid RAL and Pantone color references if you can, much better to use an automotive paint code. Pro auto paint shops have books and books full of color samples. You’ll have a much better chance of getting the color you want if you go that route.
There have been several VW and Subaru colors in recent years that would make a good Molteni base color. |

I'm glad I can now post my bikes fotos now! I got it as a present from a cousin. It was standing in a barn by the sea, so painting was in realy bad shape as you can see. It was alu-oxide blasted and it is ready for a new paint job. I love the orange color and I would like to have it painted orange (but not the molteni orange since I do'nt want it to be a molteni replica). I want to paint it the ssame as the last foto orange frame! Judging by the SN on the frame is it a good color option? I mean, did they came from factory in this orange color? By the way: congratulations to all users here! This is the best forum I have seen abou these bicycles. So much info and knawleage shared! I've been learning a lot. For a bright orange/red, look at Chevrolet Hugger Orange, also known in Pontiac land as Carnival Red. Very attractive, not into the yellow or red phases too much. Stable color coding, every paint manufacturer has a code for it for their paint system.

“Some kind of metallic orange” is a broad range of color options.
Again, would suggest that you spend an hour at a pro automotive paint store looking at paint catalogs. Many paints can be mixed with metalflake or used with pearl. Your painter can work with you to get the effect you want. |

EMC has changed ownership 3 times, the chances of preserving records of varnishes used 40 years ago are... small :)

my friend just acquired this merckx. TeVe Blad paintwork, serial number D4M B2409. Any idea what type and the tubing? Is it corsa extra? Found an Eddy Merckx Crescent in a pretty bad shape so I've been removing the paint. The original paint was very similar to the last pic but no chromed chainstay and a different type of brake attachment piece (bridge?) on the rear.
There's a marking on the downtube for "Reynolds 50 tubing". Due to forum restrictions I'll try and get away with putting a link to the photos in disguise: ( ibb.co / album / FgrM8W ) note, it's co, not com. Thank you for your valuable work! |
