Old French saddle

I was given this today

It looks "like" a Brooks of some sort but has no sign of a rear plate. Leather is actually not that bad but the press-board (if that is the right word) underside is badly cracked. It is definitely not an Ideale, based on all the online photos. I can make out the letters "...ONNAISE". I wondered if it could be Lyonaisse?

Anybody recognize it??

ADGA "la Chatillionaise.". I may have misspelled that, but not by much.

ADGA was a marque of the company Adrian Gallet, who also made Club, VeryBest, Gallet, and others.

ADGA saddles were ass-hatchets IMHO, had one on my U08. Frame could make a nice rebuild.

Thank you for the quick replies! I think it will be a shelf queen until I decide to rebuild or not.

Again amazed by how little I know and how much knowledge there is on BF.

Thanks again

They are small. The frames are cheaply made and remarkably light, which can be good and can be bad. I've never seen a broken one, nor even a bent one! They often came with really cheesy seat post clamps that slip and let the top of the post poke up into the leather, which is presumably uncomfortable but I never tried riding one of those.

Nonetheless these ADGA saddles habe their fans!

Rudi recovered one for me! Of course, it is really a Rudi Mayr saddle now, but I put it on one of my old Peugeots and ride it regularly. It is getting pretty comfortable.

To be honest, no I don't expect anyone to slip me the B17 but can always hope.....

Since it was free I will try having two rivets installed on each side and see if it will pull tight together.

One thing: I don't think Brooks-branded saddles had those cardboard underlays. Some of their subsidiary or second brands may have, but not Brooks. I could be wrong about this, however.

Back in the day, there were a lot of brand names other than Brooks and Ideale.

I bet it's another layer of leather that's even more dried out.

@rhm, what are the dimensions of these saddles? Is there a Brooks model that's comparable? My ears perked up at "remarkably light" as I'm pondering a weight-weenie leather saddle* project down the road.

*Oxymoron, I know.

The second layer of something, under the leather top, is an odd thing.

Some saddles have plastic there (TSM, for one). Wrights saddles sometimes had a coarse weave fabric, like a heavy duty canvas or something. But some kind of fiber board or cardboard is most common. On older saddles it can be hard to tell what it was. Don't Rivet saddles have some kind of fiber composite?

Anyway, its purpose is also unclear. On some saddles it appears to be a stiffener, but I understand the original purpose was to protect the leather from water coming up from the rear wheel.

As to the ADGA, I will have to get back to you with weights of various saddles. It's an interesting question.

Yes, Rivets do have underlays that look like a plastic fabric, and Selle Anatomicas have an added layer of thin leather. S-A say theirs is top grain, and they say the laminate consisting of that layer and the thicker outer layer increases the strength and resistance to stretch and allows them to make designs for different stress levels. I had a Gyes Swallow-like saddle as well, and it had an underlayer, but I don't recall much else about it.
