Oof. I can see the future - you're going to heckle me...

I got the task of turning 2019 Raleigh Grand Sports into late 70's "vintage" looking bikes for a movie... I have one day to do a test build for approval. I know.

If they had given me a couple weeks I could have found multiple actual vintage frames to build to the exact same spec (these will be one bike in the movie).

We're doing a drivetrain swap with earlier gen 105 stuff to change to silver groupo. I know, but it's our best option for multiple quantities of parts in this time frame. We are swapping over to Dia-Compe Non Aero Levers, but having the threadless stem is killing me visually. I'm currently thinking black to minimize visibility... Anyone have any recommendations for things in my control? Seriously, I know frame and fork are impossible to be made to mimic a traditional bike. The frames will be painted by the studio.

Regarding the stem, how about just hiding it with a bell or light, etc.

Dang right we are! It's the film biz.Too simple just to do it right...

Seriously why build one? Can't you just source a real one? There must be some prop house that has/ has access to all sorts of vintage bikes. If not, there's a business to go into... but I'm sure there is someone already doing it.

La Brea Bike 05-22-19 10:03 AM

I like it... Visible distraction

Apparently not in multiple quantities. Again, I am dealing with the cards I was dealt...

And when the movie comes out, just think of all the nit-pickers:notamused: who will trash the "repro":D

How about checking craigslist and buying up a bunch of closer fitting bikes and modding them?

3speedslow 05-22-19 10:16 AM

No heckling from me. You are doing your job. I would actually ride that Grand Sport.

Wildwood 05-22-19 10:20 AM

Impossible task with sloping top tube and oversized frame tubes.

You need a modern platform more like the new 'vintage' offerings from Masi, Bianchi, etc...….. just sayin :o.

edit: if those who make the decisions don't care enough to come close to the real appearance, then it's just a nit - don't own it and become the nitwit. Get the opinion of those who chose the wrong type of frame, only they can fix it. Or pray for a postponement in the shooting. Special effects?

Bikerider007 05-22-19 10:22 AM

70s bikes are on CL all the time. Or why not borrow one from someone here. I'm sure they would be glad to see their bike in movie. Repaint, parts, etc would cost more than to ship.

And wouldnt the 84 Grand Prix in your signature work?

Why go with 105? Sugino still makes square taper cranks. Velo orange makes cranks that look like TA cranks and a lot of other vintage looking parts. Center pull brakes are available but perhaps the reach won't work. In fact velo orange is likely a good source for items to make this bike look more "vintage." Check out their saddles and water bottle cages. Microshift derailleurs aren't bad looking.

So the producer wants to spend a boatload of money buying, painting, and customizing a new bike that still will never look old, instead of just going on Craigslist and getting the real thing for $200? I am so, so confused.

Manny66 05-22-19 10:36 AM

Ill let you borrow one of my bikes..

It takes .... to explain to harried producers, designers etc, why it should be done differently. If they don't know you, qnd trust you to over-rule them and be right, they don't want to deal with the unknown:twitchy: They have crews that are paid based on the time they are on set, working or standing around, and bean counters watching. My ex does this stuff, and the stories are crazy. What if the bike doesn't show up when it's needed, who's gonna take the heat? There are a lot of screamers with a strong sense of entitlement in the business.

La Brea Bike 05-22-19 10:44 AM

So. BYW, some of these will be destroyed in filming.

La Brea Bike 05-22-19 10:49 AM

We were contracted to get this specific model bike and modify it. I have no say in what the Studio uses...

squirtdad 05-22-19 10:54 AM

how many bikes? sounds like you have them already

if you can get your hands on them fast enough the this velo orange stems looks closer https://velo-orange.com/collections/...stem-31-8-rise

or maybe find some thins similar

Not bad, definitely more subtle. The first one will arrive any time. We're preparing for the thrash.

robertorolfo 05-22-19 11:08 AM

I think a lot of people missed the point that they need multiple bikes, and they should all be identical to one another (even if that means they are all inaccurate).

And nobody should be surprised. How many times have we seen street cars on screen with the sound of an F1 engine dubbed in? Ducatis that sound like inline-4 Japanese bikes? Characters firing guns with their right hands while riding motorcycles, but not slowing down...

So anyone know who got the bikes for the show "The Patriot"? They seem to change from episode to episode, but a couple looked genuinely vintage.

They are filming in my neighborhood all the time (incredibly annoying for residents), and the attitudes of these people are astonishing. Seriously, it's like they truly believe they are of a higher order. Their little shoot is the most important thing in the entire world (and everybody should know this), while the actual lives of those that, you know, live there, are completely secondary.

That sounds like a fun project! So you're using non-aero brake levers, therefore assume you have DT shifters. The DT shifters and "spouting" brake cables are the biggies IMO for the 70's look. A bike in that era will most likely have only one set bottle cage bosses on down tube and more likely clamp on cable guides. Clamp on FD more common also (you already have that!). You can consider "dummy clamps". If you're going all in then you cut off cable guides and chain stay stop and use clamp ons, but then you get into a problem of what is likely different tubing diameter than days of yore.

O.K. , I rescind my offer!!! LOL

seypat 05-22-19 01:44 PM

Are you turning them into 70's Masis?

Classtime 05-22-19 02:00 PM

Order some die-compe DT shifters when you order the stems. I don't know which 105 drive train you have but maybe get some VO cranks too. Cream colored bar tape will be uniform across bikes and look a little used.

20grit 05-22-19 02:15 PM

Things that could help:
Gum colored hoods.
Ditch the ergo bars for a normal drop bar in aluminum finish.
Frame-color matching cloth tape.
Contrasting color headtube. If there are no closeup shots, you could fake in some lug lining to make it look like there are lugs. If there is always an accenting color hitting the "lugs", it will be a little more convincing.
Silver or white cable housing.
Fake some chrome on to the fork and rear triangle.
Maybe some pin striping running the length of the fork to accentuate the length and make it look less chunky?
Frame pump
Skewer with aluminum finish instead of black
Tubular tire carrier

clubman 05-22-19 03:34 PM

White panels on seat/down tubes.

Screamers? Try a high end kitchen.

We're using the Dia Compe ENE Shifters, and Dia Compe GC202 Levers, and Cloth Bar Tape. As far as the cage bolts, I think that's the least of our worries :)Yeah, if I had more that a day this would be a completely different process!
