A very unique Miyata 912 :)
Hi all,
I bought this Miyata 912 back in college, probably 9 or 10 years ago - and from what I can tell it's a 1981. I think I paid $150 for it. It's always treated me well, shifts smoothly and rides fast - a total joy for my very infrequent and casual riding. I've never been a "bike guy" and so I never thought to take a look at the components, or compare them to what they should have been - which from what I've gathered should have been a Shimano 600 set. Today however, I decided to drag it out of the shed, give it a little wipe down, and do a little digging.
What a frankenbike! A veritable bevy of component brands and models. It seems to have close to no original components, and while the frame seems to be in very good shape, I have become curious as to what IS original on this thing besides the frame, and how they might stack up to the catalogued specs.
Here's what I can gather I'm working with.
- Sugino RT crankset
- Suntour Spirit front derailleur
- Suntour Symmetric shifters
- Shimano 200GS rear derailleur
- Dia-compe brake brackets
I have no real interest in switching anything out, because again for my purposes it rides just perfectly . To add to the uh... variety... the ONLY thing I've had "done" to the bike was have a new tube installed at a local bike shop - and to my surprise they decided to replace what was a tube with a Presta valve, with one that has a Schrader, so now I have one of each . Frankenbike complete!
Unfortunately because this is my first post I can't seem to attach photos, however I've uploaded them to my user gallery below... (I'd prefer not to spam 10 posts just to add photos, if anyone has a way to add photos as a "Newbie" I'll happily edit this post).

My '82 912 has a hodgepodge of italian (campy shifting/bb, omas headset, miche hubs, modolo brakes, 3ttt stem/bars) and japanese (sr crankset and seatpost, kkt pedals, araya rims) ... but it's also all original.
These were for sale as framesets only, and I bought it from the original owner as he had it built up. I love it.
My tip for the op is to focus on drive-side pics. And ride it.

Sounds/looks like a no-nonsense build on a no-nonsense bike!
Looking forward to a drive side pic!

One of my best finds every was a 79 Miyata 912 with Shimano Arabesque for $25 at a garage sale, it was in the rafters and I had to ask if it was for sale and I am glad I did. Had to sell the bike during some economic distress, its the one I wish I'd held on to. Enjoy yours OP!
