Chrome Bash Guards
 

Does anyone know where to purchase chrome bash guards for 70's-80's bikes? Looking for something not too massive, just a basic Sugino type guard. Not having much luck with Google.

Yes, chainwheel guards, thanks. Finding lots of colorful mtb guards, but not a simple chrome guard.

I searched for "alloy bash guards silver" - You're more likely to find aluminum guards, rather than chrome steel.
OTOH, if I were you, I might find a color anodized one that I really liked,
strip the anodizing with oven cleaner (online tutorials on it), and then polish.
But then I'm different, that way...........

I wonder if he's talking about actual bash guards or the thin, stamped steel chainring protectors, which were often chrome and found on entry level bicycles to prevent pant legs from getting snagged by the teeth of the chainring?

Edit: Either way, we'd need to the the number of bolt holes, bolt circle diameter and the number of teeth on the large chainring to provide a compatible product.

Yes, indeed, that is what I am looking for. They have 5 bolt holes. My sense is that that bolt holes are in a standard location on the chainring on bikes from that era, regardless of how many teeth. The bbgbashguard.com site has some, but they look heavier duty than what I need. As you suggested it is more about pant legs than protecting the ring. Thanks!

Trouser Clips, the old school solution for many decades, actually work to keep pants legs from getting to fouled on chain & chain-rings.

So, what you're looking for is more along the lines of the attached photo? If so, they do come in a variety of bolt circle diameters. The outer diameter is pretty standard, typically to accommodate a 52T ring, though there were some smaller versions manufactured for entry level, pseudo ATBs. These days they're typically plastic and bolt to holes in the outer chainring. Bicycle co-ops generally have a plethora of these, though they're not always in the best condition.

Yes, something along those lines, maybe not that large, more along the lines of the photo below. Would not have to be chrome, aluminum would do. For a standard 52 for an 80's or late 70's road bike.

Post a WTB ad on the C&V sales forum, and show that photo - Someone will have one, as they're very often one of the first things removed for a restoration, along with the dork disc :~)

specify bolt circle diameter and # of teeth it is to cover ..

I have de toothed old chaintoings to make them, in the past..

so look for bigger chainrings ..
