I'm not sure what causes them to try to cross roads... looking for food, I suppose? Their incredibly low speed makes it so hazardous, though! I did stop once in the Peoria area to pick up a turtle/tortoise and carefully carry it to the side it was headed towards (I was riding my bike, so I probably looked rather odd). There was another attempt with what looked like a snapping turtle, and there was no way I could have grabbed it without injuries, I suspect.

Not sure if this indicates some sort of distress, or just shows that they like to wander around like the deer and raccoons that are also struck by cars. At least the turtles don't jump out in front of cars and bikes like deer do.

this photo is from the same area. These deer just stood there in the road, trying to figure out what I was. It gave me time to pull out a camera and get a few pics.

This bit of hardware was sitting behind the Caterpillar Visitor's Center today when I was riding by on my Hetchins.
Seemed like a perfect opportunity for a quick "Steel is Real" photo, with the large and small examples.

The D10 is the second largest of the "track-type tractors" made by Cat. Not sure what it weighs, but the D11 is 200,000 pounds.
Lots of torque for pulling or pushing, but the Hetchins is faster in a sprint.

Steve in Peoria... of course

Of Course "They're Here"! Where Else Would They Be?

This tall, skinny fellow is called, "Walter". Or so I am told by a denizen of the gallery in the background. Walter took one look at my 1949 Raleigh Clubman path racer and lapsed into some kind of alien rapture. I don't know why - I just report what I see...

Oh my goodness that car ... what nostalgia. 1974 get married. 1976 get a good job buy a 914. 1977 get pregnant, last hurrah driving trip: Mpls - Nashville - Tampa - New Orleans - Memphis - back home to Mpls. (Wife, large with child has to sleep sitting on floor with head on seat). See Star Wars movie - affects child in womb. Have child, sell 914. Child becomes hopeless Star Wars geek.

Somewhere near Chattanooga I think, 1977

Five-lug wheels on that Porsche mean it's a 914/6 with a six-cylinder Porsche engine and not your typical four-cylinder car. Neato.

It would be interesting to see it in a couple of weeks. Bet it will be cut and painted.

Levee work a couple miles from the house. Given the house is below the levee crest, I'm a big fan.

It's not uncommon to see John Deere Gators on the local bike path, as they need to perform routine maintenance tasks. Sometimes a truck will be on the path in order to trim trees.
However, I saw something much larger on the path yesterday....

I just hope that the weight of the crane doesn't damage the asphalt trail... it's not built for that sort of load.
On the plus side.. it was a rainy day, so I might have been the only cyclist or pedestrian who had to detour around the crane.
