Another photo from the DC bike ride. I've never seen a kids seat like the one this mom has where the kid sits on the top tube. That has to be a more fun ride for the kid than looking into Mom or Dad's back. Lots of kids in trailers, seats or 3rd wheel hook-ups and lots of dogs in baskets and even back packs. Start'em young and include Fido

had a great ride today.
kept seeing this tourist transporter / out-of-towner-get-arounder all over my route, with seemingly the same people in it every time (i was out for nearly 4 hours).

at one of the 'let's take a picture in asheville' locations

About 200 pounds of quinces from my tree. I rode the bike 3 feet to get it out of the way and started picking. Aromatnaya variety from I think Crimea. Huge membrillo making effort next week.

Legend says that Eve gave Adam a quince rather than an apple.

saw the party bus today. they were friendly and we waved and cheered at each other. not sure if this was the drink yourself silly bus or not.

rode past MOOG. it was announced yesterday that they cut a lot of jobs and are moving production overseas.
not sure how much longer MOOG will have any presence in asheville.

Since there was some resonance with the VW and BMW classics I posted a few weeks back, how about some classics I found in my travels in my home town:
I've read that the original Fiat 500 was built with a cloth roof to save steel, which was in short supply after WWII.

This old war horse is in less than pristine shape... but the old Wasserboxer marches on.
It is against my religion to buy any car for which an acknowledged engine conversion exists -- in this case, a 2.2 Subaru can be made to fit.
German cars generally fare much better in their native land than in, say, Michigan.
cheers -mathias

And some more pictures from the Rhine valley.
A most pious area at one time, with plenty of "gravel" to ride.
Wider is better, but 35 mm Schwalbes did alright on these dubious surfaces.
cheers -mathias

Spent the weekend biking through NW Illinois with stops in Thomson, Savanna and Elizabeth. Highlights were visits to Mississippi Palisades State Park and Apple River Canyon State Park. Lot of great hiking in the parks and some of the best views IL has to offer. Happy surprise happened too. As many of you know, there's a sizeable bike museum in Elizabeth. Was passing through on a Sunday, so I knew the museum wouldn't be open. Wanted to peek in the window since we were passing by, though. Turns out Paul, the owner, happened to be there and invited us in for a tour. He's a very cordial host and the museum is definitely worth checking out. Here's a recent visit from BF member jjhabs:

"Unuseful" is the correct term here, I believe. (Although there is water behind that hedge.)

Saltzman? I once saw a professional looking sign on a pile of dirt just off 30 that said "dirt".
