That is the 60cm, and if you find it to be a little big, I'd happily trade you my 57cm. 😳

my Miyata 1000 Gran Tourer

still work in progress and I am 90% done ...

I've changed a few stock items as I will be touring with this bike ...

Wheels HED Belgium Plus with a Royce rear hub and a SON28 front Dynamo hub
Saddle: Brooks Cambium C17 Carved
Dynamo Lights: Supernova E3 Triple (front and rear)
Bottle cages: (3xNitto)
Tyres: Continental GP5000 TL (tubeless) in 32mm wide
Fenders: Honjo Hammered
Rear rack: Tubus Cosmo stainless steel, front rack is Tubus Tara stainless steel (still to fit, and the photo shows the old rack)

still to sort: Orlieb pannier bags (front and rear)

I need to change the chain rings as the current are Biopace

I need to tidy the brake cables (I don't like the cables coming out of the top of the brake levers) .... any advice?

I need to buy the gadget that will charge a powerbank whilst I'm riding
I need to lower the bottle cages so that I can use my Miss Grape bikepacking frame bag

when I'm done in 2 months time, I will post better photos on this thread

Surprised there’s quite a few of the golden/champagne 1990 1000LT’s on this forum!

My favorite is a this: bought it from the original owner. Less than 250 miles. The chain has so much oil and gunk in the chain when I bought it that everything in the vicinity of the rear triangle was perfectly preserved lmao

😂

I finally remembered to get a picture of the cockpit of my M1K-

The Selle Italia mirror is "OK." I like having the mirror up where the old Mirrycle mirror used to sit- barely a glance needed, you don't have to turn your head, you don't need to think about where the mirror is oriented- just look. The Selle Italia is really expensive and depending on the levers you're using- it may not sit very still for you. I have the IRD "Drillium" levers on this bike and the mirror is pretty decent- where you have your hands will move the mirror around some though...

Welp, the deerhead derailleur on my 1985 1000 has finally bit the dust. It is completely unfixable but I will chuck it into my parts bin box in case I need to salvage something from it.

My question----what should I replace it with?

I don't mind modern since, under the current pandemic lockdown, it might be easier to source.

I kind of like the Shimano XT or XTR stuff from the '90s...

I've looked everywhere for an 80's Miyata water bottle. Did those come with the bike?

Newly acquired 1989

Well, here we have another old guy posting an old bike. I recently acquired this 1989 1000LT in my size after earlier getting a 1988 615 that was in 54cm and just a tad small. I did pirate some parts from the 615, and it was interesting to work on both and see the differences, and the changes for 1989. The 89 LT according to the brochures is the first year with the hyper glide freehub, and also the first freehub bike for me. (new tools purchased too). Also for 89 was the intro of the first gen 105 components I think. The brake levers are still non aero so I was able to mount my favorite style mirror.

The bike was missing a couple stock items. The rear rack would have been black. The stem also would have been black, but no problem as I used a taller Technomic long quill stem.

I also used the Winpista handlebars from the 615. I believe they are somewhat of a copy of the Nitto Noodle bars. They are wide at the top which helps the mirror placement, and are flat on top with shallow drops too which helps this old guy. Saddle is a vintage B15 purchased here.

Pedals are nice SP11 platforms from my old Trek. I pulled everything apart to lube bearings and such. The BB spindle had a couple small pits in it, and that spindle is a bit different to play nice with the Orings in the cups. I went modern with my first sealed cartridge UN55 BB which worked out nicely. I have the caps for the cranks to reinstall after rechecking tightness. The 12-28 seven speed in back has a nice range, and interestingly the rear is spaced at 135 which research shows as stock. Interesting year with the traditional along with some improvements.

I have read so much about going wide on the tires. I have spent 45 years on 27X1 1/4s on my old SuperSport, so I just went up to 35s. They ride wonderfully and there is lots of room. No computer yet, but I just returned from 25 miles on one of my usual known routes. Smooth, quiet, and flexible describes the ride and machine. Flatlands Ohio doesn't put a premium on handling but the ride is lively enough for me.

Hi all,
Just recently picked up a 1986 model.
Its got the safety brake levers and a wire hanging out both ends of the down tube.
My questions are:
  1. What brake levers are used
  2. Did it have a Sanyo tire generator
I do have Shimano 600EX levers (w/ Fuji brown hoods)

Sad part is that the seat post is stuck!!!
Thanks in advance for any help

My guess is it came with slotted 600 levers as 600 "road" parts most often got paired with XT ATB parts.

You say "safety brake levers" which to me means the brake lever extensions that go under the tops of the bars. "Turkey levers" "suicide levers." As far as I'm aware, no 600 levers ever came with those.

My M1000LT didn't come with the wiring- but as I've read, the catalog and ad copy say "internal wiring" but not "internal wiring and generator."

There are a couple of 1k's locally for sale. One is my size, the other significantly smaller. Is this the correct thread to ask whether or not 1k owners think the bikes are properly valued (when links are provided) or should I pose the question in CV D&S?

Another question I have for 1k owners is; knowing how your bike rides, what else have you ridden that compares to it?

Normally I think value questions would be asked in C&V appraisals, but to be honest I've seen them go up in value recently because people are taking the time to go touring. Why spend 2k on a touring bike when you can get an 80s vintage touring bike.
I sold a few above average market value this summer so far.

What is cv d&s?

There is the cv appraisals forums you could try, but I suppose if it's just the 1k owners you want, I guess this might be a good place too?

Wow, you can take the time to consider?

In Ottawa I see maybe 1 1000 a year, and it seldom lasts a day. Right now, in Ottawa, bikes are in such high demand that if you hesitate you're out of luck—and prices are VERY high.

Thanks, I have Dura-Ace with slots but this is what I plan on using. I had it for sale on ebay and removed it. No one wanted it due to Fuji hoods (even though they were meant for this lever).

If a 1k came my way for a song I'd buy it of course and yet there is no way I'd pay a collectors ransom for one. Heresy in this thread, I know! I'd rather put the $700+ towards a newer touring bike. Below are the two local examples. I know that the one little guy is a routine flipper.

If this is for your bike, and not to sell/flip- I guess it comes down to whether you like the levers. Personally- I'd go with slotted levers because I think they look cooler (and I'm not very fond of that generation of 600).

I can't see hoods being a deal breaker on a bike I liked.
