Super Record Bottom bracket mayhem! Help! Lol!
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...9463a9261.jpeg
I am in the process of restoring a 1983 DeRosa super prestige. All the original parts are present and in good condition. The cranks and drivetrain are Campagnolo Super Record. As I began to “mock up”the bike but I noticed the inner ring was dragging on the chain stay. I also noticed that the bottom bracket cups appeared to be backwards? The side with a lock ring was on the drive side. I don’t have the correct tool to remove that cup so I removed the opposite side and took out the spindle. It measures 110mm and is marked 70 ssa . After doing some reading it seems that super record cranks should have a 115.5 mm spindle for Italian threads. Is this correct? Could it be because the bb is installed backwards that it is rubbing and the 110 mm is correct? It is symmetrical btw! And the crank is marked Strada 1 and is pantographed Bb for these are very expensive, I don’t want to buy if unnecessary... if you are a campy expert .., HELP! Lol! |
I had the exact same issue with my Gios frameset and Record cranks. It seems you have a BB meant for track or C-Record cranks.
I went with the Campy 115 BB but with rifled cups. I attached a picture. I think shnibop has one for sale still that will be perfect for your crank. http://i.imgur.com/JCEvMZ3.jpg |

Here's my Campy BB cheat sheet:
Italian: Double -Pre CPSC: 113mm. Post: 115.5 Triple - Pre: 118. Post: 124 English: Double - Pre: 112. Post: 114.5 Triple - Pre:117. Post: 123 Spc -- ≻ c - record Ssa -- ≻ croce d'aune Ssb -- ≻ chorus Ssg -- ≻ athena A 115.5 Italian BB installed the right way should be the ticket. (And yes - it's quite possible to reverse the cups and/or spindle on an Italian BB, since both sides are threaded the same.) |
That is a great cheat sheet!
I am glad I’m not crazy and this bb is the wrong size ( and backwards) they told me the original spindle was titanium but had too much flex( faulty? ) and had to be replaced. I think this bike sat for 30 years with a bb that was installed wrong and had the wrong spindle! |

Here's a good tool to own so you can remove your bb now and adjust and overhaul it down the road:

Try hognose pliers and wd40 on the adjustable cup.
Try a local hardware store for the 7mm alan key. Mine has those in the nuts/bolts section for cheap. |
