1988 RB-1 Cobolt Blue suggestions

Hi Guys,

I wanted to ask you guys what you would do? Itís a little big for me, but I donít think I will be riding it very long distances anyways. I have all original parts except for the wheels which were in very poor condition.

If this was yours, would you keep it stock? Would that enhance resale value? Or do you think itís worth more to somebody else if I build it with more modern group/wheels.

any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Seat post was stuck. Had to use an old saddle and BFH to get it out. Was successful.

Sounds like youre going to sell it. If thats the case, keep it as original as possible, no point in putting extra money you might not get back. I would upgrade only if I were to ride it.

Buying new parts for it is a surefire way to lose money on it when you sell it. Parts almost always cost more than what you can sell an old used bike for, especially new parts. If I were you I'd sell it as a frameset and be done with it.

+1 on the above.

However, it's a beautiful frame in great shape and a pretty color. if you're keeping it I'd say go all out on an early Campagnolo brifter group.

I would look at it more if it were sold as a bare frame and fork.

^^^^^+1; modernizing is not always (some would say not often) an "upgrade", esp considering challenges like rear axle spacing, etc. Use the fact that you have the original parts as your starting point / selling point.

So what exactly is in "poor condition" wrt the wheels? Hub races scored? Braking surfaces on the rims shot? Way out of true? Hard to believe they're not worth overhauling, unless there are multiple problems with the rims AND hubs. Esp. if the hubs are good and would perk up with a bearing refresh, I would consider rebuilding, just to have one more thing original. Then just put the rest of the gruppo back on and sell as a "mostly original" C&V.

The wheels werenít included when I bought the bike. The guy said it was trashed. So no clue what that meant. Iím gonna set it up stock. See how it rides and fits. May end up keeping it. Itís a clean frame and I may never get one I. This price range again.

I already have a 10sp campy wheelset. Just need a group which could be had for 300ish. Would be a stunning bike for sure.

I've noticed that around me if it doesnt have STI shifting, the market seems to be very limited and soft.
A downtube 2x7 will be listed for less(eventually) and take longer to sell than a comparable STI 2x7.
Of course a lusted after frameset can be the exception to this trend, and an rb1 is certainly coveted enough to possibly get more in near original condition.
