Same here, I usually downshift on my parking approach so I can get going easier. Is the large chainring while parked thing really one of the rules? I do try to follow most of them...

It was just a joke. Thought that would be completely obvious.

But nds photos are no joke. Don't be so selfish. Think of the children...

Hey some of us odd sized folks (long body short legs) need #5 and #6 is something I do about every week, there is a nice Carnegie Library in my Neighborhood that is a beautiful space to hang out in, and I like reading analog books I just don't like buying them. Sometimes I even ride my bike there.

Pics of your bike at the library or it just didn't happen . . . .

I'm thinking we need an ugly beater bike contest. The bike has to be (a) ugly (too bad we can't vote off the island the ringers who will show good looking bikes) and (b) locked up doing something practical.

I knew it was a joke...it should always be in the big ring, not just when parked.

Thanks for the memory. West Seattle Library was a favorite of ours too back in the 60's-70's. Although I often politely thanked the staff for their concern, but yes, Megan is allowed to read any book she wishes. She turned out just fine. Don

Its a faux pas to park any selectable chainring bike in the city. IGH, baby!

Cable lock is fair to middling in downtown Vancouver, WA; especially on a battered old road bike. It's one of those places where Mickey Methlab is likely to blast through a high end U lock to steal a Walmart mountain bike but would ignore a vintage Rene Herse that mighty be an easier mark. The criminal class doesn't know it's bikes yet.

My turn, my turn... the owner of this bike says he's doing research for his first vlog, where he'll dissect the worthy aspects of each and every one of John Grisham's novels, but in reality, he's just trying to work up the courage to ask the intern librarian out for a frappuccino. This isn't even his bike, but his room mates, who stole it (I mean borrowed it) from his biological dad. Together, they're slowly putting the bike into working order, but didn't have a pair of wire ****s sharp enough to cut the brake cable housing, so they just went with the "guesstimated" lengths the local bike shop made him. This is all conjecture, of course, but I'm usually spot on about these things.

^^^^^^^ He's probably perplexed that the intern librarian is not impressed by his (well, his roommate's [well, his roommate's dads']) Weinmann concaves.

Charming, wanting to parse the worthiness of The Firm's pop author and then desperately asking for the approx. length cables for an old road bike to get to that damnable library to woo the sweetie in spectacles. Of course the shop gave him/them too much but hey, it works! Hope they have a nice lunch together.

He had hoped that the Weinmann concaves would be a subtle 'feather in his bicycling cap', given their unique look, paired with their 'in-the-know' cred. In his head, he's trying to figure out whether she's not noticed them yet, or not impressed, or not woke. Beads of sweat are forming on his upper lip and under the elastic band of his cap, his ears feeling as if they have suddenly turned red hot. Her conversation is failing to register in his head, as he's trying to decide whether to point them out, or hold back mentioning them to her.

He thought he might have a chance, when, earlier in the week, she had said, "Hi', after U-locking her earlier 70's Pug U0-8 mixte, in blue, completed with a steel Wald front basket, platform pedals, and Avocett II touring saddle. She scooped out a well worn copy of "The Pelican Brief" from the basket. "This was someone he could certainly peloton with..." he thought to himself.

And back in the late 70s it would have been a Jason Bourne themed narration.......Like the John Grisham mode much better though, more believable than any of the Bourne novels. Got too many relatives in and around Oxford, MS.

He patiently waited for his owner to be satiated with new knowledge, but, eventually, he came to realize that that was never going to happen, and he died, broken spoked and bleeding rust.

His frame was still warm, as vultures began to fly over, picking away, at his saddle, then his tire, then.....

Parking sewer, check.
Lack of connected bicycle facilities, check.
Lack of pedestrianized access, check.
Evidence of a few intrepid souls who tried to bike in car-centric infrastructure and took the bus home instead, check.
C&V'er cussing out the state DOT and local zoning regulations for parking minimums from over 1,000 miles away, check.
