Show Us Your Bikes Starting With O
Here's your chance to show us your bikes alphabetically!
It goes like this: every fortnight I'll start a new thread with a new letter in alphabetical order. Post your classic and vintage bikes that correspond to that letter, eg; C = Cinelli, Carlton, Ciocc. M = Mercian, Masi, Motobecane. And so on and so forth. The letter of the fortnight should correspond with the marque, not the model. For example; you could post your Tommasini Prestige in the T thread, but not in the P thread. If you're not sure, take a look at the word on your downtube. There's a grey area with people's names - Bruce Gordon, Claud Butler, etc., but I'll leave it up to the owners which thread is preferred. Make sense?
So let's see your Orbeas, Olmos and Oranges...no, not those oranges.

Here's my mid 80's Orbea Cabestany. Same bike Pedro Delgado won the Vuelta with in 1985. Mine has slightly different decals. Orbea's home office wasn't able to help with dating it but did say they weren't importing to the states then. This probably the roughest bike in my collection but in all honesty this thing does move out fast.

My early 90's Ochsner. It was originally blue. I rebuilt it this past spring and had it powder coated. The color I kept coming back to is called Illusion Rootbeer. I have been putting a lot of miles on it.
Not long after the build was done

I like it with these wheels and tires.

Just cleaned and lubed

O is for OLMO

Apparently the decals had not been cleared, and were accidentally removed with WD-40 and a towel...

The only OLMO pantographing at the begining of the year. This rapidly changed.

Early crank profiling style became known as "Mexico", just as the pantographing frenzy took off. 1st version (hollow ti spindle) SR crankset.

Olmo does seem to have produced some flashy bikes in the 70's and 80's, and my Olmo Competition was part of that.
The candy paint, i.e. a translucent colored top layer over a gold base layer, is a factor in making it eye catching. The other factor is the pantographing of the components, which is a fun detail.
a few photos of my Olmo Competition, circa 1982.....
a shot of the whole bike:

the Campy crank with the "Mexico" treatment and panto'd chainrings

the panto'd Campy Record brakes

the Olmo logo on the fork crown

the panto'd Campy shift levers with the Italian colors and the Olmo star logo with the Olympic rings

the panto'd 3TTT stem, with G. Olmo's signature on the sides, and the Italian colors on the top

and a not-so-good shot showing the pantographed brake lever....

Olmo's flourish was some of the classiest, Grandis also way had it going on. Many others looked somewhat like an afterthought and were done without enough thought especially when they drilled, milled or panto'ed over or through the original marking without completely eliminating it.
It's hard to see here but they plowed right through it when they could have adjusted the placement although it might not have looked right in which case they should have smoothed it out, then done it.
That being said, at least this one's got it so there's that.

They is one of the finest looking bikes I have ever seen. The color, the shine, and the detailing is outstanding. If I was in Peoria I would try to go out of the way to see it.

thanks for the kind words. The photos don't do the candy paint job justice.
on the other hand, the photos do hide the paint blemishes quite nicely. It's seen some abuse prior to landing in my hands, but it hasn't progressed much since then.
I realized that I overlooked a shot of the pantographed seatpost. Here's one view:

If you are ever in Greensboro, NC, stop in at Cycles de Oro bike shop. There's a bunch of great vintage bikes hanging on the walls and from the ceiling. One of these is a neat Olmo with black anodized Galli parts....
