Sorry I am just getting back to you. It has nothing to do with preference for bicycles or any other reason than I have been researching and responding to posts. By the way I have enjoyed your extensive posts on Centurions which I collect and adore.
Please be sure and post some more pictures of other Vintage time trials bikes you like whether you own them or not. I have never owned a Comp TA....so how does it feel to ride it? I like the way the model looks in the catalogs. Thanks so much for your input.

The man was a time trial machine no matter what bike he was on. I have seen some documentaries of him with footage of him training and it is just jaw dropping awe inspiring. Thanks for the great post and please show us some pictures of your favorite vintage time trial bikes if indeed you like that type of bike.

That is very interesting that there was a velodrome bike made as a promo for a department store. I love odd stuff like that. 12 would be very rare indeed....I have never seen one of these that I can remember. The wood surboard mini fender is hilarious! Very creative. Yeah a poster would be cool. I like vintage bike posters so much more than modern ones. The risque Italian ones from the eighties are nice.

Similar to Starbucks revolutionizing the traditional coffee shop and bringing more expensive coffee to the masses, lets not forget who helped to open these styles to the market (IMO). I used to sell the mavic bull horn bars and clip ons at a shop I worked in the late '80's

2nd Bike....Does it really glow in the dark?!?!


This bike slapped me in the face and I didn't mind. What I am trying to say is it is an attention getter. First of all I love the paint job. Original creative paint jobs get huge points in my book....as long as they pull it off. I love the Italian colors. The half wrapped handlebar look I actually like. Anybody like me? Then you have the disc wheels. I adore disc wheels and there are not as many as I would like that use the canvas that the surface provides. This one does with all those cool squares. Suddenly I want to go to Italy. Oh, and did I mention it glows in the dark?

Mavic is a great brand and it must have been a lot of fun selling their quality stuff. I love the eighties pop art disc wheels with the cool colors. Not enough disc makers did enough with the canvas that the surface provided in my opinion. And of course the bike is lovely with its gorgeous red color. Now if I could only ride like the cyclist. Nah you have to compete against the one true opponent---yourself. Thanks for the great post.

You are welcome , the Comp rode fine . It being # 2 tube and the IM being #1 but I never got the Comp dialed in and I sold it . You asked , and I forgot to say what I liked about my track bike . I have always had a thing for track bikes even going back to the late 70's when I lived next to the Ca. Encino velodrome about 10 yrs. ago I got certified to ride at the Ca. Carson (LAVRA) velodrome .

Interesting. Thanks for posting that. I did not know about those. If the Salmon TT bike really was racing in 1981 that was quite early. I would like to see some corroborating evidence. Seems more likely that it was conceived in 81 and used later. On the other hand it wouldn't surprise me if TT funny bikes originated in France like so many other things cycling.

From my recollection, it was really 1984 that I first saw a funny bike, and not in person. There were definitely a few showing up in the pro ranks. Didn't Hinault ride one in the Tour that year or the latter? A lot of people though were still on regular road bikes, or a splitting the difference by running bullhorns on a normal bike. At amateur races stateside, you weren't going to see any of that at a TT. Just normal bikes. Put on a Brancale helmet and a skinsuit if you were lucky. The super bikes slowly trickled in during the late 80s. Triathlons were kind of the trend at the time, and had a big influence.

Incidentally I found this timeline for Gitane while looking for other early Frenchie TT bikes. Worth checking out if you haven't seen it.

This one belongs to a friend - it's been cobbled up from a few bits and is barely ridable with those drops, but its a pretty good looker, regardless. My gut feeling is that this one is a frame from the '90s era - with that fork crown, anyway.

Your welcome. I will post tomorrow some other earlier examples of time trials. They are the exception as you stated. Not sure on Hinault. Very cool timeline. What I want is a vintage Peugeot time trial with sloped bars. They are ultra rare. I have only seen pictures of a few of them. If anyone has one or knows about them or has pictures then please post.

You do not see too many of those in American bike shops! If you did I would be broke. That is a lovely bike with nice mint looking disc wheels.The paint glows. Lot of red white and blue today...making me feel patriotic. Do they have an armed guard for that Pinarello? Pinarello made many models of TT's , more than most, but none of them are cheap nowadays.
