One of my heroes, the late great Laurent Fignon. Criticised, especially as a result of Greg's win in the 1989 TdeF, for not adopting aero or modern technologies (as they were then), but these images prove otherwise - take a look at the Gitane (below left) for starters, and then the futuristic one (below, below)...Guimard was an innovator, Fignon the adopter.

Greg said that Guimard was the best coach he ever had, and Fotheringham described hom as the best DS in the history of the TdeF.

It pains me that Fignon is rarely mentioned on fora like this...he's a true great.

Was the frame made of carbon or what? I think the handlebars on this are not original to the bike though. I love FIR disc wheels. Thanks for sharing this most excellent bike. I need one to show up at a garage sale ......ha ha ha.

Just a guess but I'd bet it gets airflow around the riders legs lowering the drag of the "package" although without a rider it may have more drag than other wheels.

Gorgeous! Are you going to build it up? When I was young I would lust for a blue 3Rensho road bike

I love these old Japanese catalogs! I chose this one for the all metallic Cherubim concept TT bike. Wow, It looks Futuristic even now. I love these concept bikes from the eighties and early nineties. I want to ride this down the street and blow people's minds. I love how everything is metallic including the disc wheels and I like the solid chain ring. Also there is something really cool about the name Cherubim. It has a certain distinction. Very respected make by the way. If anyone has any TT concept bikes go ahead and post em.

Oh you went there! Aaaaaah the sweet sweet Somecs. I was going to but you beat me to the punch. Somec is one of my favorite makes. The paint jobs are great and the decals and their logo are AMAZING. My favorite is the decals with all the little squares and the lotus looking flower. Man oh man ...so cool. It is a very respected Italian brand and they are just beautiful bikes. I will be posting some of them later and they have fantastic disc wheels....but rare as hell. Thanks for your excellent post and kicking of the Somec ball.

I remember this very well! The switch went from indexed to friction shifting. It was Campy’s Response to early ‘SIS’ shimano indexed shifting

Okay so I am finally getting around to replying like I wanted to. These are very early TT bikes. The years you put them at make them very early indeed. They are cool looking to me. I always love old cycling pictures because they deem to always express the drama of the race. Thanks for the post and keep posting. Any other pictures you have would be much appreciated.

Fignon was one of the greats and he should be given attention. I thought it was very sad that he died of cancer so young. I would like to see a documentary about him for sure. I love watching old races on youtube. I knew that Fignon used time trial bikes because I saw the footage. People who say that are ignorant. As far as the futuristic bike goes….it is a fantastic bike for sure. I have this image saved on my hard drive. The colors are really great the whole scheme. I love the space age lumbar support seat and that saddle with gold and black blows my mind. The disc wheels are super cool. What really makes the bike in my opinion is the lines and design and how they flow. It is a work of modern art. I wish bikes were more like this and available. Imagine what this would cost to buy. All the modern bikes with the same brand names here in America and the exact same factory designs bore me to tears and I WILL NOT APOLOGIZE for saying so. Now you go into a bike shop in the U.S.A. and they have a contract to sell only one or two brands. Back in the day they would have a large variety of Italian and French bicycles hanging from the ceiling that were handmade.

Cinelli Super Corsa TT.

I can't add too many comments. Fine, not exaggerated shape of geometry. But still, when it leans against the wall, even as if it was rushing

And two Colnago Masters. The first is for the unusual but still great colour combination. The track bike is for its clean, graceful shape.
