This is one of the very coolest posts on this thread in my not so humble opinion. What makes it so great is that it is very personal pictures of a real event from that time period. Pictures like these are sooooo hard to find. Thank you so much for sharing the experience with us. You are riding a Nishiki Linear I know. It must have been hot as hell in Utah that day. Can you tell us a bit more about your experience that day and what it was like riding that bike in a race?

TTfan , I to love the shape of the old velodrome handle bars particularly the NJS Nittos not to mention the death drop Nitto Jaguar stem . Funny story , when I went to get my track cert (different bike same bars) the teacher did not like the death drop Jag stem and he made me change it . I was not happy with that , but I wanted that cert . So I did it . Changed it right back when I got the cert .

It doesn’t certify quality, it certifies compliance with the Japanese Keirin Association’s regulations. As a result, most NJS equipment is of high quality, but that’s not what the stamp certifies.

I’m no engineer, but the down tube is in tension, so a cable can do the job a tube can do and be much lighter. The trade off is lateral stiffness, which isn’t as big of a deal in a time trial.

Other manufacturers had a crack at it away from the TT discipline. Biomega was a well known one.

Oh, it's light... and fast. I made a real effort to keep the weight as low as possible and still be period correct. Build up weight is 17.3 lbs!

The big appeal of this machine is it's a Barry Chick built frame... he was one of the top six time trial frame builders in the UK during the glory days of the late 1970s-early 80s. And, of course, famous for building the frames for Alf Engers. You can't get a better pedigree for a time trial frame than Shorter/Chick/Engers!

The colour scheme gave me pause when I bought this, thinking it was some repaint. But it seems perfectly and entirely original and quite striking. A beautiful machine. I just wish there were more time trial friendly routes where I live to ride it more.

My other classic era British time trial machine.... a 1969 Geo. W. Stratton by the famous framebuilder Bill Gray.

This is an exceptional frame with special reinforcements at the bottom bracket and astonishing stiff and straight as a die for so large a frame (25" c-t). One of those rare true custom made frames that bought second hand feels like it was made just for me in how it fits and rides. The workmanship is first class and shows off with its very basic understated "British Standard Sky Blue" unadorned paint work.

Having just ridden my first Senior Games time trial I learned two things; there is no tech inspection, and my normalized power over the course was nearly that of the fastest guy, yet I finished fourth.

This means I absolutely must find some crazy cool lo-pro bike for next year.

Yes, those were banned. The idea was the rider could push back or brace against the back of saddle. There were other variations on the theme. Anyone remember the tether? Where this simply does not work is braking on steep downhills, where anyone fast enough to use this kit would need to slide off back of saddle and weight the rear wheel. Same with the tether. When gymnastics are needed to make bike work the rider is locked in place. Thus unsafe, thus banned.

In any oldtimer competition very hard to imagine a referee would be a stickler on this one. Will work better on a flat TT.
