Gitane Paint Poll!

Looking for suggestions on the repaint of my Gitane Track Standard. I was thinking flat gray with gloss black lugs and front forks....thoughts? Also looking for a source for decals besides $40 on eBay or is that it?

...those foil decals for Gitane (if that's what you're looking at), are actually a deal from Cyclomondo. That's who is on the other end at the ebay ad.
For a 70's era Gitane (from the foil decal period), nothing else comes close. I don't know anything about all his other Gitane sets.

That top drawing will take patience to execute...but I like it too.

Kinda scares me, way easier to draw than paint!!! But thanks!

How about some sort of Cobalt blue? Would be snazzier version of a stock color ....

Thats interesting, I have no idea what the factory colors were, So would the cobalt blue cover the whole bike? I love my blues.

Gitane had a darker blue that came in immediately after the foil decal era - if you had traces of a lower case logo and decal I would suggest a simple but vibrant Cobalt blue all over with the yellow “early Gitane” decals and maybe yellow bar tape. Simple but bold

Cyclomondo Gitane Foil Decals

I worked with Greg Softly/Cyclomondo when he was designing those Gitane repros back in 2008. We were sending pics and decals back and forth between OZ and the US for about a month.

They're pretty darn close to the originals Gitane used between 1968 and 1973.

The Gitane racing and performance models had the silver seat tube decals and SC Service Course top tube decals. These are Cyclomondo repops on my resprayed 1972 Super Corsa.

Note, almost every Gitane from the late 60's through 1973 had the "Custom Made" red hand stickers on the seat tube. A lot of wannabe expert sellers on eBay mention that these bikes are "RARE" and "Custom Made"... groan!

Note 2, on some early 70's Reynolds 531 French language decals the 531 characters were light gray-green. I had Greg make some for me. I think that he still has them but you have to email him and mention the ones he made for me, Chas.

Original Reynolds 531 French decal

The light green-gray decals he made for me.

Note 3, a lot of Reynolds 531 repop decals are bad copies of bad copies. The green 531 characters are too dark because green is hard to reproduce on some printers.

Choice Of Colors

@roadbikeChris since the bike is going to be rider not a restoration, paint it what ever color suits your fancy.

One suggestion, you should put the bike together enough to ride it to make sure it fits and you like the way it rides.

If you put a lot of time and money into it and decide the bike is not your cup of tea then a custom paint job is going to be hard to sell and you'll never recoup your expenses.

Unfortunately it is already stripped to its bones, but I did ride it briefly when I purchased it so I am fairly confident I am good.

Those green gray decals are very cool. They do look closer to the original than the ones I picked up recently for my Moto Grand Record and Libertas which are closer to the green on the bottom sticker.

I'm still trying to figure out how you're going to ride that thing with only half a bottom bracket.

I like Gitanes in the traditional period colors. Solids. Orange. Dark Blue. Purple. Green.

The orange is really nice.

I am Kinda limited by what rattle can colors I can find. I do like orange though. My other preference is dark blue...jury is still deliberating!

I'm guessing it is the orange found previously in this thread?

I need one of those 666 decals, for riding on old Route 66. I've already said before, riding around the Mohave Valley, is like riding through hell. 🤭😁😉
