Eddy Merckx Lotto colors

1985/1986: frames in yellow; facial expressions: "Gentlemen, we arrived too early or too late."
1987: Lotto fuchsia
1988: two-colour scheme used in EMC 1986-1990; Lotto fuchsia/white
1993: a three-colour scheme, but in two colours - cleverly... Lotto Caloi blue/white/blue
1994: three-colour scheme used in EMC 1991-1996; Lotto Caloi red/white/black
2003/2004: scheme for the 21st century, it's hard to describe... Lotto red/blue, double Merckx
Bonus 1: As you can see, there was a Corsa Extra 753 in 1987-1988.
Bonus 2: As you can see Lotto was supposed to use EMC bikes also in season 1989, but something went wrong.
Bonus 3: as you can see, as a revenge, the signature of Lotto 89 was changed to the extremely absurd Te Ve Blad 87 (of course, the fuchsia did not manage to change to red)

The '85/86 Lotto jersey is one of the BEST designs ever, IMO. And my '04 Team SC in Lotto/Domo colors is the BEST race bike I've ridden in 40+ years at this. (Tho I do like the Farm Frites livery better).

Awesome post. This clears up confusion around that pink chevron scheme. Some said it was TeVe Blad others that it was Lotto. Turns out both.

As a complement:
the clearest photo of "Lotto 88 stripes"
set of stickers/decals "Lotto 88" (sold under the name TeVe Blad / Lotto... of course)

painting Lotto 87, Tdf - Marc Sergeant

Great thread, very interesting.

Did anyone ever figure out if the tutti frutti Merckx' were ever used by a team?

Tutti Frutti (TF) belongs to "generation T" (like Motorola - TM, Telekom - TG etc) planned for the 1991 season. There may have been plans to sponsor some team and TF was assigned for it, but there is no confirmation. Theoretically, TF was a match for Collstrop - Isoglass 1991 or S.E.F.B. - Saxon - GAN 1991, but they used other bikes (i.e. the plans - if they existed - did not work out). It may have resembled the situation with the famous Team Forum painting from the 1990 catalogue - it was prepared for some specific team, but the agreement finally did not come to fruition (I have strong suspicions that it was the team IOC Tulip Computers 1990, but I have no confirmation).

The frame in the colours of TeVe Blad/Kelme in the Lotto thread may confuse some people

TeVe Blad and Kelme had the same painting pattern in 1986 and 1987, but the term "Kelme" was used...

I know this thread has been dormant for a few years, but I stumbled upon it while researching my latest find.
Grabbed up this ‘85 Eddy Merckx Pro SLX in Lotto livery yesterday. I had been on the hunt for a 55 with external brake cable routing for a long time, so really excited to have found this one in this livery. Thanks CyclesMakaron for posting the above team photo and also explaining the difference between the Pro SLX and Corsa Extra models (in another forum).
I wasn’t sure if the team used a black or white saddle. Black, per the photo above, with white hoods and bar tape.
I have to remove a broken dropout screw before I start the build.

I remember Kiwi former pro cyclist Eric MacKenzie returning to New Zealand at the end of the 1986 season with his yellow Eddy Merckx team bike, having raced for the Lotto team in Europe, as well as several others since turning pro after the 1980 Olympics.

Surprisingly, the frame apparently survived and is now in the collection of Forza Bicycles in Auckland (with which I have no affiliation) which has a large and varied collection of classic race bicycles from the 1980s and 90s. After several repaints it seems it is in line for a hopefully enduring repaint in its original Lotto yellow scheme.

That 1985 style lettering (thinner font on the main decals) is very rare, I think it was done just one year before EM switched to the thicker font that we all know. Nothing says 80's more than Lotto Yellow 🟡 , congrats on a great find, JEALOUS!!!

Eddy Merckx factory price lists of the time referred only to EM80 and EM86 decals, being the original italic/underlined font and the subsequent non-italic/rounded font respectively. Memory fades but I recall well placing factory orders at the time and specifying EM80 decals after EM86 decals were available, for purely aesthetic reasons, and these thinner EM86 decals weren’t part of the discussion.

I’ve seen many relatively recent photos of the “thinner” EM86-style decals, often on repainted frames, but very few if any taken back in 1985/86.

I’m not for a minute saying these decals aren’t original c. 1985 factory production but always interested in evidence that proves the provenance and originality of these great frames.

Eddy Merckx catalogue circa 1986/7 showing both EM80 and EM86 decals.

The thin decal style was for the yellow Team Lotto only.

Beautiful thanks! A picture disproves a thousand words. I stand corrected, or at least educated, more or less.

Beautiful, but my favorite will always be the Team Stuttgart colors, which eventually became T-Mobile. I have a road bike that's about a cm too small and a track version about a cm too large. It's perfect that I'll never get exactly what I want. Been looking for decades.

Yes, that was a cool frame. Unfortunately, what was told to me was a broken dropout adjuster screw turned out to be a broken tap. Impossible to remove and would have required replacing the drop out. The seller was cool, and refunded me, but it was sad to have to punt that one. I did manage to find another Merckx shortly after though. A Reynolds 753 Grand Prix in the USA livery.

Whoa, bummer! What size was it? Congrats on scoring the Grand Prix, also a very rare bird.

It was a 55, same as the new Grand Prix.
