I bought my Specialized Roubaix at a shop that was going out of business about a year ago.

They had this staggered sale...first month everything was 10% off, 2nd month, 25%, 3rd month, 33%...and the last week, 50%. One of the bikes in there was a Roubaix in my size...after taking it for a spin, I liked it, but I didn't see it as that different from my Diverge. If it made 50% off, I thought sure, why not. The shop owners assured me it wouldn't reach the 50% off day, and I didn't think it would either.

Every now and again I'd stop in...and it hadn't sold, nor had its brothers (a 54cm and a 58cm). It was getting closer...and I thought it might make it. Finally, the week before, it was still there, and it was clearly going to make it to the end (Saturday morning). I made plans to go 15 before store opening to buy it, figuring there would be others thinking as I was. The day before, a Friday, I stopped in at lunch because I needed a patch kit. There were TONS of people in the shop, and both the 54 and the 58 were in line for the register. Someone told me the sale started early - an hour ago - and the owner texted a few people. I looked over...there was my baby...with three dudes pawing her, spinning cranks, etc.

Walking over, I grabbed the bike and proceeded to the register. One of the guys said something, and I responded you're looking, I'm buying. It was aggressive, but you don't get to hold the bike while you're clearing the purchase with your wife during one day closing sales IMO. I had my card ready, they didn't. Into the register line I went, and actually became friendly with one of the dude's buying my bike's twin. We've even been on some group rides together.

I really like the bike...though I think Shimano STI is a joke compared to ergo. It's quite comfy, fun to ride, and versatile. I turned the Diverge into a super light tourer. Tom's ridden the diverge...he didn't seem too enthused by it.

Moore's Cycle Shop (and Locksmith)
Rocky Mount NC
1988 Raleigh Horizon Citysport.

My ex-wife had purchased one from Bicycle World in Goldsboro NC and I wanted one like it so we could ride at the beach, etc.
She still has hers, I believe, but rides a 2000 GT instead that I turned from an MTB into a path bike.

I traded mine for a Raleigh Technium, which I then rode into the side of a dog, killing the dog, destroying the bike, breaking my wrist, collarbone, and putting 2 spokes through my calf.

1989 was an interesting year.

In 1992 I bought a Giuseppe Bianchi commuter bike, in 2001 a locally built mountain bike, and in 2013 a Raleigh CX bike. The commuter was stolen, I gave the mountain bike to a friend and I sold the Raleigh after only two years. I prefer to buy frame only and build up to my own preferences.

from a legit bike store? never. maybe some day

my Grandfather bought my 1st 10-speed from a legit bike shop when I was a teenager. I still remember the wad of cash he pulled from his pocket. then he told me he would race me home in his car. he let me win! after some time, it was stolen & my Dad replaced it with the same bike & color, etc. we never told my Grandfather. then there were some found bikes & bikes bought from craigslist. I did buy a new bike after winning a photo contest. I wanted to do something symbolic & long lasting w/ the money. but it was from a big box store, not a legit bike shop. I did enjoy that bike for a long time before selling it.

Last road bike - 1997 Bianchi Alloro purchased in summer 1999, the last lugged Bianchi on the floor of Sunshine Cycles in Greenville. It fit me by modern standards, but today I would say it was at least 2-3 cm too small.

Last mountain bike - 1990s-something Gary Fisher mtb that I barely remember - new old stock, bought it cheap in 2000 and sold it a couple of months later. It was also just too small for me.

That is funny, expired in 87 though, many diff numbers since, and no security code. But just for grins, tried it on Amazon, didn’t work. Good catch though, never noticed it. That was my moms Travel Agency’s business credit card. That business, like most before the internet, is long gone.

4/79 I bought my ‘78 Team Champion at a steep discount.
Only other one I bought new from a shop was my Gran Sport in 1973.
I still have both of them.

My last bike I recently bought, a month ago or so, was a Giant Anthem 29er from a local Bike shop about an hour away. I live just outside a really small town, so we have no close shops.

Since then I have ordered a BMX bike from an online retailer.

I'd rather buy local, if available, but usually not the case...

I bought an MTB a few years ago. A few years before that, I bought a fatbike. If I was going to buy anything else, it would be a gravel bike, but I don't think I will. I spend plenty of money at my lbs, just not on complete bikes.

Next frame in the queue is a disc randonneur.

Northbend, sorry,
By my thinking, if you didn’t go into the store and if the bike was custom, you miss the mark on two counts. Frame only would be three. But feel free to try again.
But seriously, when I was having the conversation last night, it occurred to me that while I spend a huge amount of time on bikes, I am really removed from the retail experience. Seems I am not alone.
FWIW, Sis in Law was talking about the shop where she bought the bike like I would know all about it. It’s a major shop, good product, good rep, but I have not been in it during this century.

In 1972 or 73 I bought a Nishiki Competition from a shop on Camden in Campbell, CA. Every one since then has been used.

Hmm... 1986, I think.

I bought a used road bike in a small shop in Parma Italy. I don't remember the brand, and may need to hunt down the bike sometime.

I've bought other used bikes through other non-shop resources. And, I think at least one new bike for the daughter of my cousin at a department store.

Plus, a Mongoose Massif mail-order from a department store to be stripped to build my own cargo bike about 5 years ago.

1989 Miyata 1400. From a short lived, local chain to the San Francisco bay area, Spectrum cycles. I had the bike until summer 2018 when the frame cracked at the opening for the internal brake routing.

ultegra tri color, with bio-pace rings

Then no, I have never bought a bike from a bike store using your criteria.

Hmm, I guess I didn't include my Black Mountain Road, which I purchased as frame/fork/headset a couple of years ago and received via FedEx.
