Just wondering if there is a big difference in quality between the regular high flange hubs and the Luxe Competition. Is there any way to tell if there is no red decal on the the Competition? Thanks.

There are several generations of Luxe Competition.
The very earliest ones had no oil hole.
Then came the oil hole with clip.
Then came the gold label with no oil hole which launched ~1970.
Then came the red label with no oil hole which launched ~1973.
Above the Luxe Competition model there is the Maillard 700 which launched in 1973 and was produced by Etablissements Perrin.
One practical problem with Normandy hubs is the availability of replacement cones.
The cut/contour of the Luxe Competition cone is unique and does not interchange with others.

The biggest practical difference is that the Luxe hubs have dust shields that are not meant to be removed. If the dust shield looks as if it's part of the hub it's a Luxe.

There is, presently, a set (so called) on Ebay right now. The set is not matched, as one hub is just standard but the seller things them both to be Competition hubs. Not a chance.
Normandy hub standard...

Normandy hub competition (notice the machined face of the hub allowing for more meat where the spokes enter...

This statement applicable to the early types, not to the red label -

Yes, there is definitely a difference in quality. The higher-end ups were machined and of harder material.

That is my understanding as well but it will be easier finding cones for the lower end Normandy hubs.Originally Posted by noglider
