This bike was built up to take me the few miles back and forth to work. It doesn't often rain here in So Cal and when it does I drive my car to work. I think that makes the fenders functionally superfluous, yet somehow they are a perfect fit.

I missed this thread completely but have a few to contribute, in no particular order.
Waterford Paramount with ESGEs that used to be on my old Trek 710 and before that on my old Batavus during a Europe trip in '79.
Cimarron with Zefals.
My old Trek 510 with Planet Bikes. Still have the fenders.
My old RB-T with Blumels...
...that years before adorned my old PX10. Both bikes gone but I still have the fenders.
Three Sportses. The blue one was given to a niece and was succeeded by a black one.
The one that began this fender thing, my old Batavus in Germany in '74 with red Blumels. I sat in a city park in France in the rain and installed these, the only ones they had in stock. Made all the difference for the rest of that tour and I haven't done many miles without fenders since. My friend Pat in CT still has the bike and those fenders are on it once again.
And the same bike five years later in Austria (different trip) wearing those ESGEs.

So you see, fenders can have a long and happy life. Get yourself some.

It is interesting that this thread popped up now... I don't think I ever had a bike with fenders in all my years of riding. Fast forward to last week, and the guys that I am riding down the coast with are all emailng back and forth about fenders. And IT. JUST. WON'T. STOP. RAINING here in CA. so I ordered and installed these which are designed to fit on bikes that have no buisness wearing fenders (SKS ReceBlade Long). With 28 tires and a 80's race bike things are tight.

Not a fender fan myself. There are times I've been caught out in the rain, but unless I'm in the PNW, don't start out if it's raining.
Am also in the going-to-California-next-week group, so hauled out the fenders and fitted them to the Gran Tour,
Had to acquire new rear stays, as the ones fitted to the Davidson were too short (!).

I went through the whole thread and there is hardly any mention of short fenders. During the bike boom of the 1970s, they were standard equipment on a lot of ten-speeds. There are several stories about why they were even a thing, since they don't offer a much protection. One is that a road race was to be held and the local government ruled that all bikes ridden on public roads had to have fenders, even for a race. Another theory is that bikes sold to the public had to have fenders, even replicas of race bikes.
I found this Marukin rusting away in front of an antique shop. It's a typical bike boom era ten-speed. It's not the highest quality, but it has some interesting features. The Suntour Spirt front derailleur has a 1974 date code. The fenders cleaned up nicely and seem to have a hard anodized satin finish. The bike weighs in at 32 pounds, and the fenders only contribute about 2 ounces to the total. Most of the other short fenders I have seen were chrome plated steel.
