Frame Saver -- How Does it Perform?

I have an old Schwinn Voyageur frame I would like to rust proof. How does FrameSaver do it's job? I've coated fuel tanks with sealer before, but it seems FrameSaver operates in a different manner. Does the mist that is sprayed coat that well, or do you have to rotate and coat every mm of the frame inside like you do with fuel tanks?

Thanks.

I know, crazy right?

I got Fluid Film for my last 2 treatments. Will it work? Who knows, it's like taking vitamins.

Thanks friend! I just ordered some for my steel frames. Did you need to tape the BB threads up to keep them from getting fouled or is it more like a lube where it won't matter?

I've switched from using Framesaver over the years to Fluidfilm, and I'm happier because you get way more of it for the same price, and it also works great on old oxidized paint and a bunch of other things. I don't worry about it getting into the BB. It is a lubricant after all. Once its inside the frame, it tightens up and doesn't slide around anyway.

The latter, I just wiped the threads.

Welp, looks like my $16 including shipping was a waste of time buying the Frame Saver crap. And, it's a little bitty can at that. I feel like I've been taken now. Thanks to ascherer for the link. At least I think. :(

Don't forget this test didn't simulate real world conditions. In practice, if the inside of your frame isn't actually exposed to all sorts of salt water, it should be fine.

Yeah but the inside of your frame is subject to condensation at some level. That test did give me some pause

smontanaro 12-28-19 08:27 PM

I still think you'll be fine. That condensation won't be terribly salty unless you live near the seashore and don't take care of your bike. These products all dry and should protect against the minimal amount of water that develops inside the frame. As a practical matter, I suspect insufficient rinsing after chrome plating or sweat dripping from the rider or sprayed up from the road (and not rinsed off) will be more detrimental to the integrity of the frame than condensation.

If a frame hasn't rusted out by now (>20 years on) under who knows what sort of care, I rather suspect the current careful steward isn't going to do any damage, no matter which of these products was used. OTOH, if that frame was mistreated, before your turn as conservator, spraying in the best thing you can find probably won't help much. If you're going to buy a new steel bike (say, a custom), ask your framebuilder what they recommend, then use that.

I think frame saver works fine. Maybe if you were going to spray it on the outside of your bike, like fluid film is designed for. I have both for some reason.

Cosmoline.
For those of us that grew up in the '50s and '60s there used to be ads in Popular Science/Popular Mechanics where you could buy army surplus weapons, jeeps, and who knows what else that were covered with Cosmoline to protect them from rusting.

Hmm, Boeshield T9 is from the same people that the 737 Max is from....
