Maybe Bianchigirll
any idea ?

The Columbus decal does look like the 1988+ SLX decal. The Bianchi logo decals are 1988-1989 style. The seat lug is the investment cast style used on the SLX frames during this era. Based on the combination of decal style. SLX decal and chromed chainstay, it should be a 1989 Mondiale.

why Shimano if it's italian?
300$ CAN

Cyclist0108 12-23-19 04:33 PM

This looks like my 1987 Bianchi's SLX frame, down to the same decals. (The frame I have now is a warranty-replacement as I cracked the original frame. I got the replacement frame in 1989 I think. So somewhere between 1987 and 1989 would be my guess. I had a superleggara but they bumped up the frame quality from SL to SLX when they replaced it.) Bianchigirll will know much better.

My bike had a mixture of Campy, Modolo and Gipemme parts. Presumably the parts that would have come with the SLX frame would have been a bit better. I very much doubt the Shimano stuff is original.

No real idea what, but I think you should get to it. ;)

It looks remarkably like the bianchi frame (Rasta Ride) that I picked up recently, but my frame was stripped of decals, paint and most other commonly used identifiers. Your seat stay caps are not panto'd just like mine. I've seen some other websites where people have posted their '89 Mondiale, Giro or SL with the same blank ST caps. I would bet that the S/N on your BB has a "Letter.9" indicating that it's an 1989 frame. Plus, I just uncovered a new fact about my frame that I'll post shortly on the "Rasta Ride Rebuild" thread.

I'm with T-Mar. Looks exactly like my 89 Mondiale.

rjhammett 12-23-19 11:05 PM

In 1989 the Mondiale, Super Leggera and Giro were SLX/SPX throughout. All three came with Campy components.

For once I can maybe help. Did the same researching on another Bianchi fitted with Mavic/Shimano/Campagnolo components for sale locally last summer. It should be an ‘89/90 Mondiale level frame, some of which were sold as F/F only and outfitted by whomever. Someone could have also stripped the components for some absurd reason.

The SLX and drive side chrome indicate that level frame (Giro/SuperLeggera/Mondiale). I understand the frames were identical under the paint/components.

’89 spec sheet below (from an older thread on here). But I saw many references to the F/F combo being available, and the seller I contacted on the bike below (note the Mavic starfish crank) said it was bought bare and outfitted to the buyers preference. They said it didn’t have a true model name when sold bare for what that’s worth. Can’t believe I passed on it but ended up with an SLX later, for cheaper, but more of a project :foo:...

I got my 1990 Mondiale as a NOS bare frame. It had been sitting in a box at a LBS for 20 years. The Mondiale F/Fs came without any model sticker.

I built my Mondiale frame up with a mishmash of Campy components:

It fits me perfectly and handles great but the SLX ride is rather harsh.

Also, I was a little disappointed in the workmanship, my 1988 Giro has a much cleaner built frame.

Love it! Thanks for reinforcing my celeste envy. I’ve noticed the same workmanship (or lack) on my ‘90 Giro black version. I’m not an expert but I can tell brazing is thicker on one side than the other, has a couple paint drips, and paint has an orange peel texture in rather large stretches. Oh well, I’m most worried about what’s under the hood and getting the steel properly protected. It also generally fits my requirement of looking decent from 10 feet, at 10 inches you see the truth..... Contemplating a repaint but that’s a story for another thread (from earlier this week :)).

edit: verktyg : at the risk of thread hijacking, what width tires have you used? Would that help with the usual harshness of the SLX frames? Wondering as I’ve stripped my Frankenbike Giro down for touch up or repaint and planning out the rebuild.

Mine fits 28's if you pull the rear axle all the way to the back of the dropout. 25's slide right in without any trouble.

I'll see after the hollidays when the owner gets back
i got a few 7800 groupsets Waiting for frames
little more dinged up than i like
anyone have a close color match this shade of celeste?
i know it can be a pita, i had one a while ago and ir sucked trying to get the right tint

rccardr 12-24-19 09:28 PM

If it's an 89 Momdiale, it's the light minty pearl version...not their best. My understanding is that as of 2010 Bianchi had used 18 different versions of Celeste.

Rather than try to match mine, I had it repainted.

A quick Google search for "Bianchi Celeste touch up paint" yielded a slew of findings.

I bought a bottle online, maybe eBay. All 3 of my Bianchi bikes are a slightly different shade of Celeste - pronounced "Che-Lest-Tay" for the OCD... ;)

A number of local Bianchi cognoscenti have mentioned that the folks at Bianchi used to mix the color on a daily basis.

Don't know when the practice stopped but a local frame builder had a long term contract with Bianchi USA to do all of their warranty frame repairs and resprays on their better model steel frames and backed up the story.

He still works on a lot of Bianchi frames even though the arrangement ended long ago. He told me that every frame is a different shade and he has to match colors when he does a repair that doesn't involve a total repaint job. The colors range from a light green to a light aqua blue.

Not really a Bianchi expert but I don't think that they went to the pearlescent color until later. I posted pictures of my 1990 Mondiale above and it's standard Celeste.

Because at some point in the last 30 some years the Croce de Anue group was stripped off and it was rebuilt with this hot mess.
