Decals were from Velocals. I prefer the true water slide variety.

1980s Somec Air
I bought this frame and fork locally, they have matching SN (D55). Not sure the year but it appears to be an Air 2001 model. It had non original paint and decals when I bought it, so I did a re-paint in my backyard using spray.bike (coldharbour lane) with silver flake Keirin finish. Built her up with nearly complete 7400 Dura Ace group (I'm picking up pedals tomorrow). Decals are from Bicals.

Wow, your Somec likes the spray.bike paint treatment, Looks great!
Is that a home repair on the chainstay RD stop? |

Maybe not your home repair, but a repair none the less. Appears someone drilled and tapped what remained of a broken cable stop, creative repair though. New paint looks great btw.

I bought this frame off E-Bay...shipped from Italy. Anyone have an opinion as to whether it is a genuine Somec? The graphics are strange to me...https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...0a4b152a2d.jpg

The welds around the BB shell compared to the other welds suggests to me there's been a fairly major repair done at some point. Possibly that's when the Somec decals were applied. If it's not a repair, it's definitely not Somec level of frame finish. Somec are quite good with enquiries regarding frame ID, so e-mail some photos and serial number to Lara: https://somec.com/en/contacts/ |
This local find is 'on the slab' right now, keeping the original Martini paint, ordered new decals.

PSA: bulgier.net now has the bulk of the 80's and 90's Somec catalogs: https://bulgier.net/pics/bike/Catalogs/somec/

A few months ago I posted pics of a Somec frame I bought from EBay and had shipped from Italy...unsure if it was genuine. Following the suggestion of a forum member I contacted Lara at Somec who confirmed it was indeed an aluminum Somec from the 90's. I built it up with period correct 600 Ultegra wheels and a 10 speed Chinese (Sensah) groupset. I am sure some will consider it a cardinal sin to go with the Chinses groupset but I needed to keep cost under control...

The handling is exceptional. |

I was cruising the interwebs and found this. It appears that this swivel cable stop on the chain stay was a feature on some Somec models. Apparently not a repair. BTW... Not my frame

I can’t for the life of me figure out what the benefit of this style cable stop is.

Does anybody remember the Somec magazine ads from back in the day? A naked dancer, posterior facing the camera, looking over her shoulder, posing with a frame superimposed over her? Pure Italian awesomeness! We need one of our resident scanners to scan it for us!

That’s the one! They said they only built 1,000 frames a year in Lugo, Italy, 40 km outside Bologna; only two frame builders.

Here's my 1980s Special with Aelle tubing. The frame looks pretty much identical to the OPs bike, although mine has mounts for a second water bottle. sloar, if you're still about, is your paint original, or at least restored like the original? My frame had been repainted when I bought it and the seller seemed to think it was a 1984 model and I believe painted it as such. Do you you happen to know the year yours is? We seemed to think alike with the blue details!
