Freewheel question
I replaced the chain on my 85 Sequoia with a Sunrace KMC Z-72. I'm wondering if the bike would shift better with a newer freewheel
Right now it has the original Suntour New Winner Ultra 6.

If the frame's rear spacing is 126mm, why not try a new Sunrace 6- or 7-speed freewheel? They're fairly inexpensive on ebay.

Sometimes a new chain with an old (worn) freewheel can cause some skipping problems. (Same with new FW/old chain). Things seem to wear out together and you don't notice until one component gets replaced.

Many of us have found that the Ultra and compact spaced freewheels shift better with 9 speed chains. Post a few closeup pictures of your New Winner. I'll look for significant wear on the teeth. It's not unusual, especially on the small sprockets.

IThe 2 problems I have are when I shift into 6th gear the bike will shift smoothly on the stand but hesitate when I'm riding the bike. I just put a new shift cable on but there's snow on the road so I can't test it.To me it is odd that I have the high limit screw all the way out and it won't shift too far out. I'm going to have it checked for a bent derailleur hanger. The other problem is it is very touchy to get into 2nd gear, it has to be trimmed just right.

The teeth on the front of the sprockets looks good which is a positive. However, they wear from the back first, and there is no way to inspect them (except the largest sprocket) without removing them from the body. But they do look to be in good shape.
Many of us have found that running a 9 speed chain shifts the best on a Suntour Ultra spaced freewheel. I realize you just installed the new 7 speed chain, but if you have a 9 speed to check with, give it a try.
You don't mention which RD you are using. I've found that my Campy NR and Rally RDs require trim after nearly every shift on an Ultra freewheel (although it doesn't look to be a Campy in the picture).
