Brake pad or pad and holder replacement for pre-2000 Campy Chorus

I currently have Campy pads in a campy holder that has oval ends. I could replace the pads alone, or maybe Kool Stop makes a replacement that doesn't need my holders? Or I get the ;ads and take the old ones out. Any advice would be great. I am more interested in stopping power and not looks. I wouldn't mind replacing the unit, but would like to keep the Chorus brakes as they fit well on this bike. It is a track bike that has very little clearance and these brakes fit.

I've replaced the original rectangular pads and holders on my vintage brakes with the Shimano type holders that Koolstop makes. Without seeing the entire brake assembly, these look like they would work, just by bolting the pad holder to the slot on the brake arm. I like the thinner profile, it makes vertical adjustment easier, and the center mounting screw has a concave washer that allows easy toe in to eliminate squeaks. To replace the pad, just unscrew the screw on the end and the pad slides right out. These pad holders should work on almost any type road brake, except Mafac Racers which use the stud type cantilever mount.

This is on a Weinmann centerpull

Here is a Universal 61 centerpull.

These are the same brakes as on my bike. I only have one brake on my bike as it is a fixed gear track bike that I drilled the front fork. Therefore, I want the best braking I can get out of my

old Chorus brake.

I would like to change to those, but not sure if they would fit my old Chorus? I posted pictures, what do you think? I am looking for stopping power and this isn't a show bike as it is well used, but fun to ride.

Well, I guess I will try the Shimano idea. I have another bike with the same old Chorus brakes and they have these pads/holders on them. Not sure what make they are? I remember putting them on in the 90's I think. The mounting seems to be close enough to the Shimano's you recommend. Any other ideas are welcome?

Since you drilled your fork, and it may have not been designed for brake mounting, not sure what your set up is. I measured mine, and you need 1.00 to 1.25 inches from the leading edge of the fork to the pad holder mounting screw, thru the slot on the brake arm. If you have that, the longer pad holders should work fine.

Sorry for the funky camera angle, but its hard to hold the tape and "one hand" the tablet camera, but I hope you get the idea.

If you have oval ended pads consider these:
KOOL STOP KS-CDB BRAKE PAD CAMPAGNOLO DELTA C RECORD BLK 4PC

I added 4th generation Campy Delta brakes c/w these pads a couple years ago, contrary to what others say they stop as good as any bicycle caliper needs to. I'm sure the modern Kool Stop rubber helps but older Campy Delta, Chorus & Super Record get a bad rap IMO

Check out the KS-CDB as they already have the rounded ends and provide effective stopping power, Good luck!

Here are the pads I got and they fit perfectly. I just put a little soapy water on them and slid them in by hand. No tools. They are made for these holders. Thanks for all the advice. This bike only has one brake and I just wanted to get advice to make sure and I think I got what I wanted. I will come back with a review as I live in Pittsburgh ride a fixed with one front brake and if that brake isn't working well, I will know it. Thanks again!

This is a VERY valuable post, which led me to go with the original holders. I know they clear. My bike is as tight as it can be to the point I can't run 100 lbs of pressure in my front tire. Yes it is a 23 and I could run smaller, but I prefer to run my Conti 4 Seasons that work so well for me.

Thanks!!!

So I have been reading volumes on this because I am thinking I want to replace my brake pads on my Chas Roberts.

Here are the current holders/pads. I don't know what they are even thought I bought them new in the 90's. I would like to get holders and pads and Shimano comes up a lot, but the bolt might be too big for the hole. I need to find someone that has old Chorus brakes as pictured here and that knows if the Shimano type from Koolstop would fit?

Thanks for any help. Lots of topics I have found, but still not sure if they will fit my exact brakes.

Those look like Scott-Mathauser brake pad assemblies. I have the same on Suntour Superbe brakes, and also am thinking of replacing them due to their age. I think you can still get these NOS?

I have slightly different Chorus brakes (94 dual pivot) and the Kool Stop dura advanced shoes and holders work very well for me. The grip is better than the original pads, especially in the rain. The toe is easy to adjust, and they are virtually silent while braking.
The holders fit just fine on the frame, which I imagine is somewhat normal road bike dimensions.

Yep. I figure I would remember the name. It has been a while since I purchased them new. Never liked how they mount. No idea what I did with the original pad holders from my chorus brakes? UGH! I will look around though.

Thanks.

Resurecting this old thread as I have another bike that I am looking for the holders shown above. Hoping to get 4 holders. Any suggestions? I find that it is hard to find the rounded ones like I have pictured here. Tanks for any help.
