I did a bit of organizing in the basement shop just now, mostly boxing up a couple of sets of parts for upcoming projects and clearing them off of my main work space. The wheel grotto is kind of a hopeless cause as I inherited lots of various and sundry wheels from a bike friend who just moved:



The main workspace is pretty organized. I essentially have about 800 sq. ft. play with. My table saw is the primary surface, and three of those bikes hanging to the left, I’m storing for my friend:



This pano shot is an attempt to show pretty much the bulk of the main area. Off to the left is another bench with a vise, and a bunch of storage areas are off to the right (including the wheel grotto).

First, an orientation. This is the layout of the lower level of the house. The bike areas are in gray to the lower left,





Here is my "before" state - taken about 10 days ago. I have space, but tool organization in particular is a deficit. Shown from the entry door, counter-clockwise.

I have gotten a start by putting up shelves between some of the studs to the left and right (not shown) of the door. Have done a bit of this in the adjoining area as well..


There's a separate "room" behind the shelves. Not going to be part of this event, but there will be paneling separating the spaces. The spaces will eventually get a panel ceiling and possibly another couple light outlets. The room behind will be storage/display, with a 4 x 3 array of angled bicycles along the partition wall, and additional storage for approximately 9 bikes under the stairs. That probably won't get completed until 2022 or 2023.


The space has a mix of general "shop" items, bike parts, bike tools, and bike projects. Bikes/frames (r-l) here are a 40's or 50's Robin Hood (black frame), a 1970 Raleigh Record (blue frame), a 1970-ish Carlton Corsa (green), a 1978-ish c-itoh (the white frame depicted behind the Corsa - that I got for $10.00 mainly for the tires, but which will be going on the trainer), and the 1973 RRA, which is wearing the swallow-ish saddle that I got from rhm. Getting that one on the road is one of my next ambitions).



This gives a better sense of the size of the space. I had already purchased pegboard, which I will be mounting above the work bench that's at the far end. Also seen in the picture are my wife's 1981 Miyata (on the stand for bar wrapping, cabling and adjustments), her 1962 Dunelt 3-speed which is barely visible behind it, a 5-speed 1970-ish Raleigh Sports atop the chest, and the 1949 Clubman which is due some FW adjustments and eventual brake caliper replacement.



There's a whit Mk I Raleigh Professional that's behind the Clubman. I really should move it to the other space, since all it needs is some air in the tires. There's a rolling bench that has a small planer, vise, and grinder on it (as well as other stuff that doesn't really have a home), and finally, my late uncle's old Superbe - which also needs a lot of care.




and the final corner of the shop, which is truly languishing.

I do have one small success to report though. I have no aspiration to ever take this bicycle on the road, because it's too large, certainly would handle like a pig, and weighs a ton, but until I come across a suitable mixte, the c-itoh has a home on the trainer. As an added bonus, I found a use for one set of crusty, steel 27" wheels, and a passable set of tires that had been lying around and adding to the clutter. I promise to be careful to not get that brake cable caught in the front wheel on a blazing descent.

This challenge came at an opportune time. My garage was exceptionally cluttered and in disarray a few days ago. Here are a couple before pics and a couple in progress pics.

I haven't travelled extensively outside of the continental US and Canada, so I would say I only know what I know. Last year I went to Cambridge UK for work and was shocked at the tiny bicycle shops that I found. They were roughly the size of a medium sized bedroom and STUFFED to the gills!

After leaving the UK, I did get a bit of an appreciation that Americans are spoiled with our space... but I was also happy to go back to the extra room! I like/hate the TV show house hunters, but the International one is funny. It always has a couple saying "I'm looking for 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, located in the city center of Dusseldorf.... my budget is $1,500". Nothing but sad blank stares coming from their agent.

These are a couple of the ones I went to. I walked into Greg's, saw absolute chaos, and left about 5 minutes later.

Its gotten worse since we started doing a 3 day quarantine of all deliveries. The clean spot has gotten use with a cot as a hide out. I, unlike everyone else in our full house, am not an insomniac.

And we are back...just need a couple’a dry days...the outside 4’x8’ box I built last summer is almost empty...great for excess tools, wheels, etc ...maybe a little less sea breeze, too... anything under a steady 15-20mph with 45mph+ gusts...

I so need to get out there and get organized. 44 years in the same house, and 2 cars, 8 bikes and laundry still fit in a two car garage ... sort of. To get to anything I need, I need to move at least two or three others. The quarantine would be a great time to take care of this, except the weather is so nice out. Approaching 90+ degrees Friday. Too hot to work in the garage, just right for riding. 😎 Here's my "Before" picture. Don't know when I can post the "After". I've added two more bikes since this picture was taken.

There is a work bench back there, behind three or four bikes.

Well, I patched about 20 tubes, rolled and ready for use. The nice thing about patching that many tubes is one can pump them up, let them sit overnight, and the next day see if the patch really held. My yield was about 85%



I stripped down 40 MAFAC RAID brakes, cleaned them up a bit, and organized the individual parts.



Believe it or not, this is a lot cleaner and organized than a month ago.

Been on this for the last three months of weekends now. Cleaned up the workshop, then cleaned up the right half of the shed to get the Bike Share Museum bikes off the ground and hanging as they should.

Still need to clean some more to to make room for the '80 Sports and pair of Raleigh 20's, but I'm not going to attempt to hang them before adding some collar ties to the rafters. The dockless machines are not light like the Paramount or the two Raleigh Professionals. The Rudge DL1 also comes close to scraping the floor - it's big machine!

Selling 24 bikes since the beginning of April allowed me to drop a garage sized mini storage rental, clear bikes out of another garage, and working on reclaiming yet another garage by the end of June. The local bike shortage has made a great market for selling. Only 40 more to sell! The last goal is reducing my still large personal fleet. But tell me, why do I have 21 Brooks, VO and Ideale saddles?
