Funny thing about that picture... First- it's really hard to get a shot of that stretch of road without cars coming or going to the ferry. Second... a large print of a *really similar* picture used to hang up in the ferry building. I took a picture of that picture and everyone was like "that's amazing- how did you get that shot." And I was all like "you have to be up there at 7:30 to get the mist and before the ferry traffic is queuing up..." before finally working your way into "taking a picture in the ferry gift shop building."

On a serious note: there is still hope for humanity. Just scrape off the top layer and we're back in business.

Low angle light may help make a photo more dramatic but it's also a scary time to be out riding a bike into it.
Luckily, the Middle Fork Road is a dead end road that ultimately ends in a designated wilderness area that sees little traffic on weekday afternoons...

Bicycle trip to Panama, 1971. These shots show the wonderful back road, Nevada 305, south from Battle Mountain to Austin. I don't think we saw on car during the day, the sign says 90 miles! More photos of the trip on this link:

This is one of the reasons I keep going back to Tuscany every year: those roads that flow with the hills, from town to town, flanked by cypress trees. The hazy sunlight and the gravel dust complete the picture.

Taken during Eroica Montalcino, so technically the road is not empty (look closely and see at least one couple of riders):
