Another headset problem.
 

Removed the headset from my 1986 Miyata912. The bike didn't have many miles so I just cleaned and reused the caged bearings. Cleaned and re lubed the cups and races. When I put it back together
there is only room for one spacer between the cup nut and lock nut. If I try and use the two spacers that came out there aren't any threads to screw the locknut on. Should I just go ahead and use one spacer?.
I'm pretty sure I put the bearings in the right way with the open end of the cage facing the cup.

Just in case, double check.

Sounds like one of the caged races is upside down. Have you seated the adjustable race? Do you feel any binding?

The bearings were the problem.. What I had looked at and read was that the open end of the cage faces the cup.I
didn't realize that some cages go in with the open end facing the race which was the case with the Miyata.

Just to follow up, spacers and washers can be optional depending on the number of them and ability to get the topnut properly tightened, only one of either/or can be used, it will usually be the washer.

This can present when the HS is changed for a different brand/style/stack, you can go minus for a short steerer/taller stack or add for longer steerer/shorter stack.
