Obviously a KHS MTB, but I cannot find a single reference online to a Sierra Sport, but like a knucklehead, bid anyhow...it was cool looking to me. It'll be interesting to see it up close.

Interesting array of carcasses for parts...Headset of unknown origin, Sugino AP (and presumably BB), looks like a Cyclone FD and some SR Custom pedals? Brakes are installed interestingly...and are also of unknown brand (to me)...

Ooo...shiny

And a chain too!

The yoke cable is worth the price of admission!

Ghost decal

Embossed seatstay...Tange something tubing

That bridge is the one thing that made me question bidding.

Fork is reaaaalllllyyyy cool.

Knurled locknut and a serial number I can't interpret...

The cantilevers look like Dia Compe 960s to me. These came stock on my 1986 Bridgestone T700, hopefully this helps.

Thank you. There is one mystery solved. They are a pretty sturdy brake if I recall.

Looks like an "old School" MTB before there were actual MTB components. Great find I hope that chrome cleans up nicely for you

Yeah, early-ish looking features and a model of KHS I've never heard of before, either. Looks like a fun project, has some nice oldskool components. Put some slick tires on good wheels and it will probably will ride like a Cadillac.

Definitely fun...have some Araya VP-20s on 7 speed HB RM-50 Exage hubs on the way. A bit more spent so far than I would have liked, but couldn't resist having a ready set of wheels delivered (tires and tubes too!) for $80 shipped.

Seeing if I can pair a Sun Tour VX rear derailleur with a Shimano 14-28 cassette...

It'll probably be a little of a money pit overall...

A friend of mine says maybe they were made especially for the Sierra Club!

I would have thought the Sierra Club would be against mountain biking.

considering this comes from before Al Gore invented the internet it wouldn’t surprise me information is unavailable.

It is also possible it it is mid year release and never got cataloged.

Back in the 80's that group was the cat's butt. Almost all Suntour with BMX pedals. The inexpensive head set was pretty much bomb proof though, unless you soaked it ever ride. You will need a set of bull-moose bars a set of older brake levers that look more like motorcycle levers and some good thumb shifters and you will set. Wheels were likely five speed but check you may have six speed compatible frame. If you can't find the right shift set lemme know. I can likely send you the ones on my Mt bike that is going under the knife for a refurbishing. Smiles, MH
Oops! I forgot the rear derailleur, look for Cyclone long cage, but if not the VX long cage works great as well.

I just took a small hit on a pair of vintage SunTour Accushift (with the friction setting) thumbies (not the ratchet ones I love), right before I read this...Hopefully they will play nice with my newly rebuilt VX, the included Cyclone FD, a 7 speed Shimano cassette, and all will be well. Have several items coming in from a BF member, so hopefully it will shut my wallet.

This is probably the case.

I am hoping my friend wasn't serious. Sierra Club would DEFINITELY have NOT wanted MTBing in protected areas. We were members...!

The three things that drew me besides the full chrome, were the unique fork crown...the embossed stays, and the fact I couldn't find a single thing out there on it. Not knowing anything about KHS before, headbadge seemed normal enough! Haha.

Just found a soft-ride stem in my parts box I forgot about that I was going to sell...would it be sacrilege to use it for this bike...? HAha

no opinion as to it being sacrilege, but it WILL add some weight, less than a suspension FORK would add (which WOULD piss off the bike Gods!). Myself, I'd try it without first and see if you think you need some front-end "relief" before "spoiling the clean lines".

probably going to sell the soft ride, and deal with any cavity rattling characteristics on the Cadillac!

I just recently found one of these as well. Pretty cool artifact. I would post pics but I need to get to 10 posts before I can.

Similar. This frame has been up for ages. Not as much call for vintage ATB frames as i would have expected. People like them, but only to a point. I find them interesting too, but not interesting enough to actually buy one.

I guess I'll just keep posting on this thread until I have enough posts to finally post a picture of the one I found locally.

It's been 9 months since jdawginsc opened this thread. I'd be interested to see the progress on this KHS?

I agree with the brakes being Dia-Compe 960s! They are a bit of a challenge to setup/adjust but, with patience, doable. They were stock on my Miyata Two-Ten. They do allow for "toe-in" to reduce brake squeal but are pretty specific for (I believe) the wheels that the bike was designed for. The bosses with the pivot points are welded to the seat stays at a point specific to the wheel size.

Jdawg has unfortunately taken on too many projects especially with the Bikes to my students rewards program! In fact, I am hesitating, but thinking of offering up the KHS to BF members. I hate to see it gather dust.
