Brake pad thoughts for 80's era Dia-comp 900s with U-Brake rear.
Normally finding decent brake pads online often times for bargain prices is easy. Yet not so for these brakes because the older rear U-Brake which needs a somewhat centered heavy shorter 50mm or so pad with no toe and 30-35mm post to work good almost no extra clearance. So options seem limited to semi junk or the not so great OPC-12 cheapo's. Normally I wouldn't post on something like this but here's were it get's a bit odd ordered some nice looking supposedly NOS grey matter made in Japan and got these oddities which EBAY gave me full refund nearly instantly basically today when sent them back.
Stated as NOS made in Japan grey matter MTB pads for those with good eyes can you spot the 7 things the lknock-off artists got wrong.

Kool-stop Cross Pad?
Also check out the KS City Cantilever.
Hmm, what's the length concern? Come to think of it, I'm running generic Kool Stop Eagle 2s, 64mm long, offset posts, on a set of Dia-Compe AD990 U-brakes on our Schwinn tandem, with no operational issues.

The length concern is mainly the posts a lot of nicer generic pads have 50mm posts and anything over 35 would be into the drivetrain and pad wise much over 50mm would have alignment issues. My late 80's Speecialized Hardrock has surprisingly tight clearances setup on the rear only 5mm or so wiggle room on anything makes for great perfomance but can be a pain parts and maintence wise.

I second the Kool-Stop City pads. Shouldn't be any issues with cutting or grinding down posts if you have the tools available.

Oh so it's the post length, yeah, I can see how a long post on a chainstay-mounted U-brake might pose an issue. 'Course, you can cut down the post, right?
