N-3 Yesterday

I gave away three of my 'hoard' bikes yesterday. My niece and her dad (late sister's husband) needed 'beginner bikes' so they can start riding. She lives literally a stone-throw away from the Cleveland Metroparks 'Emerald Necklace' and its almost 100-miles of bike path...

They couldn't find anything on the used market that wasn't outrageously expensive for what they were, and of course bike shops around here only sell new $500+ bikes these days.

He's probably close to 280 pounds and is afraid to even attempt to ride his old skinny-tired road bike from his college days 40 years ago. He gets the Huffy MTB that I had rescued from the garbage in nearly new condition, but had a flat tire. I had put tires on that one and used it for trips to the corner store.

Other bikes given to the cause are two step-through frames - the 12-speed Spaulding sold by Sears that my wife rode exactly once and has been 'seasoning' in the barn loft for the past 30+ years, and a Sears 3-speed with a speedometer that says 85 miles - likely original miles based on condition of the bike. I had found that one on a treelawn on garbage day from someone who was moving... These two bikes will need new tires since they literally cooked to a rock-like hardness in the attic heat. I gave her a pair of Kenda 27x1-1/4s for the Spaulding, and she will be ordering the 26x1-3/8 from Amazon (she has a gift card she wants to use)

I feel better...
