40 Years Ago: June 1980 in Bicycling magazine
This was a tough one. It's supposed to be a Camping Issue, but I thought many of the camping-related articles were probably too simple or irrelevant for current C&V campers.
So I included what I thought was the best of the camping articles and then other articles that reminded me of what 1980 felt like in general.
Of course, let me know if you think I blew it and you'd like to see something else listed in the ToC.
Just send me a PM that includes your email address and I'll send you a pdf of your requested article.

I thought snow in springtime on a dune...she must be a resilient Yooper (thought I saw "Escanaba" on her t-shirt).
Then I read the caption.

I’d love to see “outfitting the complete cyclist” if you don’t mind adding an article.
I have a few bike touring books and some mapped routes from the boom days, and I’d love to find more.

Reading that Africa trip story- when did triples become the norm on touring bicycles? This man toured the world on a 10 speed. Seems to have been a quality bike for the time given the weight listed though. I'd also love to know how he packed on such trips in comparison to the gear and bicycle setups you find as the norm these days.
Also- can anybody ID the handlebar bag on the cover?

The recumbent ad reminded me I test rode my first recumbent in 1981, in Santa Cruz I believe. Underseat stearing. Not my recumbent, my first ride. New tech to try.

Dilberteur at large
The Bicycling magazine articles about touring stirred my wanderlust in my younger days. I'm finding making more time nowadays to scratch that itch. My bliss is going on a tour with friends, and I always feel a bit down when I'm done. I dream of tours to come.
Interesting article about the fellow riding his bike through Africa, and getting stuck in Sudan for 10 weeks because of an epidemic, and the article about commuting in NYC and how bike lanes started opening up then. It reminds me that there's nothing new under the sun.

How about seeing "Bicycle Workshop" p. 114 "hottest new cycling products"
Also curious about the camp stove article p. 137
I had a Optimus Svea in the 70's.

Funny how they called Avocet's resin aero platform pedals (rebranded Ofmega Mistrals) "featherweight" I have The Ofmega originals and featherweight, they certainly are not. A lot of quill pedals from that time was much lighter than those.

I really liked my Coleman Peak 1 stove. I had two small stainless steel pots that i stored it in on tours. I had a piece of closed cell foam sleeping pad that went around the inside of the pots and held the stove snugly. The two pots fitted over themselves. I used the pots like a double boiler. With the Magic Pantry entrees, I could cook a meal and make coffee/tea in on sitting.
Cheers
