Rudge Hand Logo

Just thought I'd pass along a site I found that disputes the Rudge hand logo being the "Red Hand of Ulster." The author claims to have "nailed down" the exact date of the trademark. Seems it goes quite far back, and has nothing to do with Ulster - according to the author. Originally was the Whitworth trademark long before Rudge and Whitworth joined together.

From that website...
"In order to find the truth behind the hand, we need to go back to 1891 and the birth of the Pugh family's "Whitworth Cycle Company". The open hand superimposed on a bicycle wheel is in fact Whitworth's trade mark & is regarded as "the open hand of honesty"

That sounds like a piece of propaganda if I've ever heard one. The hand of Ulster dates back to the 1400's and very much represents the subjection of Ireland's provinces to England. If any company used that hand in it's logo/marque/advertising, there would be no mistaking the political sympathies of that business. Honesty in advertising indeed. (not sure about the formatting here...

Strange. The link doesn't seem to be working anymore, but if I type in stratford-rudge.co.uk the site comes up.

I was able to connect. I'm with clubman; propaganda, clearly symbolic.
