Has anyone done a "Lightaction" upgrade?

I just purchased a beautiful and very well kept Nishiki Olympic 4130 Chromoly with a decent Sugino crank, nice weinmann 700 wheels(quick release front&back). I updated it with 44cm bars(I'm a big guy) off a felt bike, 105 aero brake levers, and a nice selle italia seat, all of which were taken off my Peugeot.

Anyways, the only thing I'm bummed about is the gears... it's a 12 speed, and the components are "Lightaction", which, from my understanding, are not too reliable. Can I upgrade the derailleurs to Shimano 105's? And, are all "long" rear derailleurs the same size?

TIA

I duno what is 'unreliable' about light action derailers. They are just clunky but functional. No problem upgrading tho.

Yeah, clunky they are, but I'm more concerned about the RD snapping in half.... I heard some horror stories. Since this is going to be used as a cruiser, I didn't want to be like 30 miles away from home and helpless. That's the main reason for the upgrade. Any suggestions as to what might be a good choice if upgrading a RD?

Yeah, mine was perfectly functional until it snapped in half. I did get 10 years of service out of it though.

Well, call it what you may, but evidently mine wasn't the only case.

My Le Tour came with LightAction stuff. The deraileurs were rusted out, so I replaced the rear with new 105 and the front with NOS 600(double.) I switched out the rear wheel with an 8-speed cassette hub, and switched the downtube shifter to friction, since it only indexed for 6. Messed with the limiting screws a little and it has been very reliable for many commuting and touring miles.

Hey! Thanks!
I'll look for a 105 RD. Did you replace just the cog (in the rear) or the whole wheel?

The whole wheel, since I wanted to move to cassettes. If you're JUST looking to replace thr derailleur, you don't have to do that. You can leave the rear wheel and freewheel as is, if everything works fine.
