Paletti super Prestige
I'd like to formally introduce my mid 80's John Phillips Souza Special Paletti. I teased it with a couple of pics on a short July 4th ride. I picked it up over the winter and had been sniffing around for parts before deciding to strip down my Moser for donations. I rushed to get it built for Independence Day and since have tweaked it some and only had time to get it out for one proper ride but I'm really impressed with it. It's a real racer and can back up the over the top livery with a spirited ride!
The saddle is Navy Blue - doesn't really come through in the pictures very well. I've given a thought to some blue or red tires; might as well go all in! https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...45fa4fdc_b.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...146673df_b.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...69805d85_b.jpg |
That's some serious red, white, and blue bling. That's a cool bike, :thumb:

Cool bike. Reminds me of Apollo Creed.

The paint is in decent shape with the base color being a very nice pearlescent bone white. The seat tube Paletti logo was pretty beat up - it was black with gold outline. I couldn't find a match; odd how a lot of sellers had sets with just one seat tube logo, but I got the yellow set from a nice seller in Australia off ebay. There were wavy red stripe decals on the lower down and seat tubes but they were very ratty, so I went ahead and removed. You can see some faint yellow from residual red bleed through. I'm a little curious if the decals on the bike were original and if the Stars and Stripes are an aftermarket job. Chainstay has a "Prestige" decal, while the BB is embossed otherwise as you can see.

I'm loving it!!!!!!!!!!!!
Patriotic colored jerseys, sock, gloves and such are easy to find for when you ride it. It took me awhile to find a red, white, and blue modern helmet though. |
Do you have a shot of the rear dropouts and chainstay layout?

Here you go. Chainstays are flattened/ovalized, but not to the extent of a diamanté like on a De Rosa. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...cc3bd676d.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...56feb64fe.jpeg |

Do you have shots showing the chainstay / dropout junctions with the skewer out of the way? I'm looking to see exactly how this was done.

He was a young American...
I think I would have gone blue Benotto tape and red cable housing to the right, white to the left and blue to the rear caliper the shop I worked for ran an advert in Competitive Cycling in 1976 Support your Flag, Buy American Buy a Masi ! With a graphic of an American flag waving and stars floating about |
Thanks for the pics. The dropout/stay treatment is fairly unique to Paletti built frames.
