1987 Schwinn Super Sport
I just found this today on letgo for 100 bucks. It appears to be all original. Even the tires. Have not touched it yet nor rode it either. I was told it was from Schwinns higher end but I have not looked into it much yet. Any thoughts on ride quality and such.

Ahhh the Star bottle bosses :-)

The rims do not even have wear marks from the brake pads. It looks like it was hardly ridden at all. Will tear into it tomorrow afternoon. Maybe find some new tires and tubes.

Other than that, nice bike! It's my size but I already have too many projects in the works. |

Tires, tubes, and brake pads. Replace the brake and gear cables just so you can get some grease on the cables. Lube the chain. After 3 decades of sitting I bet the grease in the hubs, headset, and bottom bracket has turned into cheese.

Here’s the 87 catalog. Strangely, I can’t find that color for any year but regardless it’s a nice score.

that is my plan off attack for this one. I was thrilled when it was my size. The head set says its Mechanically sealed and is that shimano 600 odd ball fitting. I do not have the wrench for that but i will see what I can do!!

I have one with the earlier Magenta(pink) & white paint scheme that I put upgraded components on.
I'm just a recreational rider, but I think it's a nice bike. I found a large socket fits that headset nut and doesn't leave any marks on it. I forget the size...1 1/4" maybe? https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...fdc1c93d56.jpg |
Thanks to everyone with the tips and pictures. I am looking forward to working on this machine and seeing how she runs!!

That poor bike has had no fun, let her rip!

https://bikehistory.org/catalogs/1987.html Apparently some buyers/dealers found the magenta and white color combination difficult to accept. |
Funny how they recycle that name. Prior to that model in the earlier 80s the SuperSport was a sport touring model. Saw several for sale but not locally so I looked into them a bit. Those were just down from the voyager I think and had a few braze ons. Obviously not yours, but funny about the name. Kinda like GM recycling classic names. Looks very nice.

That color combination was releasedlate in the model year so never made the catalogue.

The older mechanic said that bike was top shelf in 87.
The Tenax tubed models (Super Sport, Tempo, etc.) were, and remain, exceptional values but lack the snob appeal. Superb geometry, good enough tubing, solid components and just generally good stuff. The numbers say that my 87 Tempo -whiich is set up with Shimano 9 speed- is as fast as my Merckx, Pelizzoli, Cannondale and Bianchi. |
Very good to know. Going to clean it today. Bought Specialized tires and tubes at LBS and plan on installing those if time permits. AKA wife wanting to go out to dinner lol.
|
New tires and tubes. Greased everything. Did not replace cables as they are working fine as of now. Took it for a short spin. Rides a bit stiff but is super responsive and fast. The index shifter is flawless. Cannot wait to get it dialed in and go for a nice ride!! Super excited and happy with this one. This is the highest quality bike i have and it feels like it !!

These are great bikes. The only down side I know of is that you can't cram anything bigger than 700c x 25mm tires under the fork crown.
You did well at a hunnerd bucks!!! |
Very pleased with how well this bike rides and handles. Its quite fast and very nimble. Did not have enough time to go for a longer ride and am looking forward to that. When cleaning up the front forks , i noticed it says Tange on the drop out .

https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...9859033665.jpg apparently somebody liked the 600EX group better than they liked the bike, because they swapped out every component on the bike, from the crankset to the headset. Somewhat of a bright spot, the only one, they swapped the shimano 600EX derailleurs for a set of suntour superbe pro derailleurs in nice shape. The crankset went to 500 ex exage, the brakes went to weinmann 405s https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...4397253b65.jpg the shifters went to modolo "carbon fiber" and the headset went to whatever this mess is https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...1ed79381fd.jpg stem and bars have been swapped as well. It seems to be in decent shape overall aside from all or most of the good components being swapped out for junk, trying to decide if it would be better off to part this one out, the frame is too big for me, I'm thinking if I tried to gather the parts to bring it back I would lose money or just break even. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. By the way your bike is awesome |
