colnago master BB advice

Hi learned C&Vers
I am building up a 90s colnago master frame on super record 11 but i am not very familiar with campus or older frames

could anyone help me with which of the many bottom brackets I should get for this project?

thanks in advance

Super Record Ultra Torque Italian thread

RobbieTunes 10-15-20 04:51 AM

If UltraTorque: A set of UT cups for Italian; the bearings should be on the crankset.

Otherwise, I’m not sure.

poggor 10-15-20 06:21 AM

There seem to be two size options 68 and 70?

Do you have a crank ?
If so is it square taper or ultra torque??
Dont want to buy the wrong BB if you have a crank.

68mm will be English thread; 70mm Italian thread. Your Colnago is almost certainly Italian thread.

Italian road bikes use 70 mm

When I did this, my research indicated that there seemed to be a preference for Record BB over Super Record. Something about an extra seal? …. because of the difference between a Record and Super Record bearing. Can anyone confirm? I ended up getting the Record BB, but would have preferred the Super Record just because it was black. The Record is a dark bronze color.

You will need the Super Record BB if you have the Super Record crankset. You cannot mix and match here. The CULT (ceramic) bearings have different external dimensions and only fit in the corresponding "cups". (Boxed "A" cranks, not 100% sure if this applies to earlier 11 Speed)

NOTE- I have the Super Record groupset with the boxed "A" on the components. You need to have compatibility throughout the main components of the driveline to make 11 spd SR work.
The following components must all have the boxed "A" marking- Shifters, Front Derailleur, Rear Derailleur. The crankset is also marked with the boxed "A". Campagnolo wants you to run everything boxed "A", but I would guess that the crankset wouldn't matter.

There was quite a substantial change within the span of the 11 Speed gruppo. Even the front derailleur has a different pull ratio.

If you are building an 11 spd groupset piece by piece, you need to match the components to the iteration.

ETA- It's pre and post 2015 Pre 2015 will have no special markings. Post 2015 will have a boxed "A". Visually the look very different, so even without seeing the boxed "A", you can tell at a glance if it's pre/post 2015. I could tell you from a pic easy.

Interesting thank you for the information. Yeah mine is 2015+ Ultra Torque Record 11. I was under the impression that the only difference between 2015+ Ultra Torque Record 11 and Super Record 11 crank was the CULT bearing, Titanium bolt and reverse thread. I did not know that the CULT crank bearings were different dimensions from the Record crank bearings. I could have sworn the bearings were interchangeable for 2015+ Ultra Torque 11. I knew the Super Record was ceramic and thought I read somewhere that the Super Record BB (cups) did not come with a certain seal (spindle maybe?) and the Record BB (because the bearings were not ceramic) had that seal.

Hmmmm. You got me on that one. I know that Campagnolo insists that you run the matching BB to the group (due to bearing dimensions), but maybe there is some secret combo that the end-users have figured out!

I just always match groups exactly.

When I pick up my used SR 11 group, I’ll look you up.
Seller upgraded to 12-speed.
Seller says crankset is “2015.” I assume that means I watch what BB I use.
I can’t see how anything else would need to be matched.
(It worked on his Domane..)

Everything else is about 18 months old.
Calipers are 12-speed version (he uses direct mount).

I’m assuming he’s using the new BB with the new crankset.

I’ll just look it all over and figure it out.

Yeah, I'm going back and searching the internet again. Everything I am finding is UT is the same as far as bearings and bearing cups go. I'm not finding anything regarding different dimensions between UT CULT and regular UT crank bearings. I see a lot of mention about CULT not needing seals because you don't grease them....which is maybe why the Record BB comes with seals and the SR BB doesn't.

I see a lot of mention that Power Torque is different than Ultra Torque which is expected.

You can see the boxed "A" here.

The BB is marked "Super Record Only"- Perhaps it's just the deletion of an inboard seal, but the BB cost the same as the Record, so why mix?

The ceramic bearings.

Yep, making sure the markings are the same (compatible) is very true. That "A" should also be on your shifters and both derailleurs.

I think it might say SR only because you don't want regular UT bearings which are not ceramic in there without a seal. A seal certainly wouldn't affect anything if you chose to put SR cranks in a Record BB I don't think.

Does this mean SR is not compatible with any other Campy level?
No mixing of FD/RD/crankset/BB/Shifters?

Don't quote me on this, but I think the markings on the 2015+ 11 speed Ultra Torque has more to do with generation vs. group level. In other words the 2015+ 11 speed stuff would not be compatible with the previous generation 11 speed.

I'd wait for the experts to chime in, but that is what my gut is telling me.

You can mix and match. Currently I run Chorus 11 Speed (2015+) front derailleurs with my SR setups because the cage is aluminum, and wears way better. It's just compatibility with pull ratios, 2015 post/pre.

CyclingFool95 10-16-20 02:18 PM

Ultra BB cups are the same geometry but the SR ones are missing the seal that the other series need. So, if you use a SR cup with a Chorus bearing, the bearings will get fouled sooner/ You should be able to mix and match newer Chorus/Record components but not with the Power shift stuff (Potenza, Centaur). Pictures show 2015+ chrous crankset and super record cup (no idea of the vintage of it)

Thanks! A picture is worth a thousand words.
If "dimensional differences" denotes lack of a seal, then that's mighty thin on Campy's part!
