We know, that a cloth, shoe or bag is never new, actually ages old just husbands "never pay enough attention on S/Os". To be fair this game can be played with bikes as well, and I have heard stories, like guy changed his Lamborghini a few times even from closed to cabriolet, but even with bikes it is unfairly more difficult to pull off.

Started out in the garage around 1980 (me on the left). My son is 45 now. He rides a Gary Fisher hybrid.
Moved into the basement and had a few decades of accumulation.

Wow, my feelings of inadequacy are being sharpened by this thread. I have a mere 6 bike collection across my family and they're all hanging in a purpose-built shed attached to my house—except the one that's hooked up to a trainer in the basement. I don't have any more room for more bikes without losing some of my current stock, sadly.

I have two racks for my 6 bikes. One, a simple 2x4 lag screwed to the garage overhead with staggered hooks. Bikes hang form the front wheel, lowest bikes just off the floor, adjacent about 18" higher. Heaviest bikes go on the low hooks. (Farmers market bike, city bike.) Lightest bikes go on to a freestanding 2x4 tower in the center of the garage. 2x2s padded with innertube hang two bikes per side, high and low, by the top tube. 3 bikes hang there plus 2 frames.

Bikes with leather saddles live in the garage. Those with vinyl saddles live in the stand-up part of the crawl space. Leather seems to mildew in the crawl space.

It rusts and corrodes bikes.
Garage, barn, shed, they aren't ideal places.
Storage in the house is best.
But Japan's houses are notorious for too small, once called "rabbit hutch".
We need a space saver like this one, MINOURA P-500AL-6S pair stand.
My wheels are in the Ostrich's wheel bags.
It rusts and corrodes bikes.

In the attic
In the garage (I do have a nack for vintage ABU fishing gear also)
On the porch with the pooch...
And to park them I use this contraption. It keeps the front wheel straight and the bikes from falling over - and you can vacuum the floor without moving them around too much. Also OK for minor work on the bikes.

For better and worse, I’ve had to find off-site space for my bikes. A few linger at the house, but most are now in a functional if not beautiful basement.

I built this several years ago and it has been a nice place to both work and play. I was just out your way on a project and glad I am back where it is a little (lot) warmer.

Sweden is the opposite. Winters destroy our bikes. Houses on the other hand are big and I do have a house larger than normal - even for Sweden...
