What is this little knob poking from the head tube?

Germany_chris 10-31-20 03:58 PM

It's a pump peg

nlerner 10-31-20 03:58 PM

Pump peg.

Pompiere 10-31-20 04:12 PM

Here's one with a pump on it. I think pump pegs became more widespread when bikes started getting a second set of water bottle mounts on the seat tube.

I thought it was either that, or where you fill the frame with helium.

The great American hero!

Vestigial frame tube or supernumerary top tube.
Most bicycle scientists feel the answer is inconclusive.
Either way, go ahead and use it to support a frame pump.
That's how most of us use it.
Whatever you do, don't finger it obsessively while riding.

Nope, here's where you do that. 😄

Aww man, you answered too quickly... I would have said something outrageous like "Zirx grease fitting for the head tube" :)... (hey, what a great idea....)

GamblerGORD53 11-01-20 10:17 PM

If the pump can't be braced against something, then they are near useless. IMO.

Yes. Use to carry the pictured one on my Montello. Hit a hard bump on the MUP and it was knocked off! Almost caught in my spokes. Certainly upset my riding rhythm! Another time I hit it when using my DT's. CO2 is now the source of filling repaired innertubes or replacement sew ups.
