Especially if it is embellished with pantographing and cat stickers:

Shannon, that's the one I'm looking at on Friday!

I THINK I’ve seen Aelle and/or Cromor Somecs around on eBay. I seem to remember it/them without the head lug treatment.

I don’t know the brand well but saw a similar paint scheme and Somec on FB market place a few months back. It was under $200 with crappy pics. I messaged within 15 min after it was posted but someone snatched it up quick. I wondered what it may have been as I’m not sure how “low end” the model line of SOMEC goes?

great looking bike, I love the Gipimme group

I vote Somec for this exact reason. Hard to beieve you can go wrong either way, though.

Very well could be. Seems like SL tubing and above got the cool head lugs.

Gipiemme is also, like SOMEC, underrepresented. IT Has Gipiemme hubs, brake calipers and crankset (BB, dunno); Campagnolo fd & rd, and brake levers; Mavic shifters.

gomango 11-11-20 05:28 PM

Buy one of each and live with them for a bit.

Internet discussions are fun, but you can tell the difference when you compare in person.

I currently own five classic track bikes including an Eddy Merckx and the de Rosa rides the best - so fast and responsive. It's not the most expensive bike I own, or the best condition, but it's for sure the last one I'd sell. I don't think my dentist would want it.

Biketiger 11-11-20 06:10 PM

Right now there are 14 Somec bikes or frames on ebay and around 30 de Rosas.

Not in my experience.

The shop I rode for had three options with a De Rosa frameset.

Think of good, better, best.

It was all defined by groupsets.

The "dentists" were not racing att. Think of 22 year old's right out of college. They were riding for the local shops and/or schools.

A few bought the Campy options.

Everyone else bought the frameset with 7400 or Suntour.

I rode/raced with 7400.

Dentist bikes hit the front page here with Serotta.

I think it's around '85 or so. And mine had a Super Corsa decal on the non-DS chainstay, so apparently that's mine's model name; this is the replacement, just like the original:

'Want' more than 'need'. Wrong continent unfortunately.

I know.... I told you I've checked the shipping prices :( so we need to find something nice at such a low price which makes up for them.
Mine was EUR100, friend's (who got the plague for Somecs after seeing mine) Cromor with Martini paint was 140, Air 2001 sold last month in Switzerland for CHF160 (I'M still crying if I just think about that).
Still there are plenty of people not knowing what they have.

Expanding bucket list. De Rosa in the stable so it may be time to look for SOMEC. It took years to get the DR Pro.

Bikerider007 11-14-20 07:05 AM

Without pics or knowing if pricing is good, fair, or overpaying...just get the DeRosa. It really is that easy.

Ungaro 11-15-20 01:39 PM

Brought it home!

SOMEC for the win!
If the DeRosa had been a bit larger, it would have been a tough decision. But like I say: if it doesn’t fit, then color and price don’t matter. Need to swap out the stem from a 120mm to a 100mm, and may change out brake levers & calipers at that time. Will post some detail shots in a day or two.

That was the first thing I did before I test rode it! Even if I didn’t get it, I was going to set the bars right!
