Got my offer of $30 rejected. I am tempted to just kick the extra $10, but wanted to get y'alls thoughts on this. It does have two flat tires.
Also, the wife likes it.

On another note, I have had several offers rejected over the years where I offered at least 90% of the original offer. I have never understood why folks even bother with the "make offer" option if they aren't willing to knock 10% off the listed price.

I bought one of those last year with drop bars for my daughter to take to LA to do an internship. It is her only form of transportation.
it has drop bars, and is in slightly worse shape ( we didn’t want to make it pretty, to try a reduce the chance of theft).
we were both very happy with it and really like the way it rides.
I say, you pay the full $40 and take it. It’s a surprisingly good ride.
I will even give you the $40, if you send me those fenders.

Generally when the item is open for bid , the make offer feature is for someone to make an offer above the opening bid to circumvent the bidding process and purchase the item outright. Other wise just bid on it and hope no one else bids.

That is a pretty sweet looking ride.Drop bars look good. Wife said the fenders are the best part so not sure I can part with those.

Good point. I don't think any bidding action is going to occur as it was already re-listed with no bids. I think I am just going to go ahead and get this thing.

I think she will like it. My daughter is short and only rides the seat about a cm higher than pictured. But she uses that thing for her daily commute (or will again soon, she is sick with Covid right now) and grocery shopping etc...
during the worst of the equipment shortages she gave up on her tubes and tires and we bought a set of Yellow Tannus wheels/tires.
They ride just fine, I was really surprised. The yellow matches the decal and the 80s vibe too We got them mostly because she was tired of patching tubes on the side of the road and being late for work.

Tuning can be finicky, the indexing is actually in the derailleur. The cable is a solid wire and I don’t know if they are still available

this is just one of those bikes, not very light, not special, not well thought of...
we bought hers to be disposable, but in the end, she really likes it. And paid more for a lock to keep it safe than we paid for the bike.
we put on 700c wheels and a shimano 7 speed cassette with friction shifters on the stem and worked well.
when she got her Tannus wheelset (more than 3x the cost of the bike) she spun a new cassette on and is loving it as a dependable commuter.

I did an internship ant your poweplant in Monroe back in the early 80s.

The forward freewheel uses a special tool to take the crank apart. I'm pretty certain the one I had was in the freewheel tools that I saved and cleaned up after the fire. They're not that hard to find, although not common, either. That drivetrain is one of Shimano's most famous dead ends, I think the idea behind it is that you could shift while coasting (obviously made for the American market, since we couldn't adjust to the European idea of pedaling while we shift).

Maybe so BUT in the pre efbay/CL, days, make offer was the seller saying "I know i'm overeaching, being optimistic, whatever so give it a shot".

I have 2 or 3 good friends that made a good part of their fortunes buying and selling muscle cars, hot rods, race cars, etc. and no way in h**l they ever paid asking price if the ad said make or best offer.

Actually, they rarely paid asking price no matter what the ad said.

^ I know what you’re saying, but auction is different than buying outright. The way eBay does the “make offer” feature along with an auction item is confusing . This is a recent thing they started not too long ago . Like your friends, if someone was SELLING and put make offer , I would always come in at what I would pay for an item. But , when an item is for auction, the sale is usually higher than the opening bid. To me , an auction item doesn’t need a make offer feature.

Here is where the bike is at now. Everything seems to be in good order, just needs a cleaning.

Frame appears to be in decent shape outside of scratches.

Using aluminum foil and EvapoRust to clean up surface rust.

I am thinking this will work well for my wife as she does not like the idea of having to deal with shifting so hopefully FFS will help make that a bit easier. It is also unique and weird enough to be cool...to me..

I don't know if you will be able to get the solid cable out of the cable housing, but if you can, grease the cable really well. Cables are hard to find an preserving yours will be important. You might even be able to use new housing on it. It has been almost 40 years since I looked at these systems. The key is to keep that cable happy. With the cable moving and the derailleur cleaned and lubed, it should work well.

Wait a second? That has a Schwinn welded on kickstand!?!!! I don't remember that. I never knew Giant made bikes had the Schwinn welded on kickstand. I learn something every day.
