Will Vintage Bolt-on Lever Bosses Work with Modern 10 Speed Levers

Hello All,

Can I use the Shimano SL-7900 indexed 10 speed levers (photo) with the vintage bolt-on bosses shown in the bottom photo? This is a 1979 Trek 710 with what I believe is the original bolt-on boss hardware.

I have successfully used these same levers on the brazed-on bosses from a 1985 Trek 410.

If the vintage bolt-on hardware won't work, can you recommend a substitute that will?

Thank you!

jlaw

I don't think the levers will work with your band clamp, but Shimano did have a clamp that accepted the index levers. It has the same square base like you would see brazed on a frame.

I looked on ebay and found some options that look like they will work.

Problem Solvers makes a clamp-on boss. Their promotional photos also show what looks to be the very same levers I want to install.

Thanks!

Heavy duty clamp with top of the line shifters! Check the diameter range of the clamp compared to your down tube.

Have used similar clamps from them; work well but not the most elegant.
I’d hold out for a Shimano clamp, they are out there. Sold two last year for about $10-15 each, and they were new.

Do you have a part number or photo of the Shimano version that works with these levers?

This is a nice bike and I agree that it deserves silver hardware that's a little more graceful if available.

28.6mm downtube - I've seen the one below on ebay - made by 'PTP' (Paddy the Peddler) - these are a brushed metal with exposed welds, not chromed - will probably oxidize. ?

There is a Huret clamp that will work. I know because I used it with 7700 levers on my 710. The only little thing was that the band was a tad small and the levers were not at 180 degrees from each other. Maybe 170+/-.

Those Huret clamp-ons are certainly shiny! For $20 might be worth a try. The square portion of the Huret boss looks to be a bit shallower than those on the braze-on bosses on my Trek 410 (on which I successfully installed the SL-7900 shift levers) - and shallower than the Problem Solver clamp-ons.

Thanks for the info.

The band that was on my 710 with 9 or 10 speed levers is now on my daughters with 6 speed levers.

Ok - good to know. I just ordered 2 sets of the SL-7900 shifters. They were much harder to find recently than they were when I first purchased a set in 2018.

I have really grown to like indexed DT shifters.

If you go with the huret clamps you can just run a simple brass washer on each side about $2 at you local hardware store.
