Pantani`s 2000 Tour bike sells for 66,000 euros ($80,000)....
Hi Guys,
As a huge Pantani fan and collector of team bikes, I watched the auction of the contents of the now bankrupt Mercatone Uno collection with some interest. The two Pantani bikes were both way out of my league but a man likes to dream. Both bikes were the real deal, the main was a 2000 Bianchi that he road on at the 2000 TDF and the one bike he famously dulled with Lance on, the other a bike related to the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Both frames were estimated between 20 - 25 thousand euro.
Forget that.
The Tour de France bike went for 66,000 euro (around $80,000) - kind of expected because of its monumental role in cycling history. The surprise for me was the 2000 Olympic prep bike which went for 46,000 euro ($55,000 - a suprise because its "just" a Pantani bike and in my mind more suited to its estimate value. The great news is that most of the collection was bought by a group of collectors headed up by David Cassini and are being donated to the Pantani museum free of charge - just superb.
The bigger question is what does it say about top end values? Imagine the value of Pantani`s `98 Mercatone Uno Bianchi he road over the Galibier - probably the pinnacle of collectable bikes in my opinion... or maybe anyone of Merkxc`s Colnago`s, if you could guarantee the provenance... Chris Boardmans Lotus 110 from the opening Prologue at the Tour in `94... Moser`s hour bike.... the list goes on and on....
Most of these bikes are well tied down in museums, but now and then....
Thanks, Dan.

Hi, and thanks for that news item. I was wondering if you knew anything about the bike Pantani took to Cuba? I heard that it stayed behind.

Team bikes! Yes, fun to talk about and think about. It's the years between and lore that's make these prices possible. The average man who has such bikes, most likely had a connection to the team or company. Some of these past stars could probably care less about their old bikes. I know Mario Cipollini claims to still own ALL of his past team bikes. For a man of ordinary means, I think you'd have to speculate on current rider end of season deals. And to do that, you'd have to make some connections. Probably a lot of bikes are gifted to friends and team employees. Dorkdisk: That's pretty interesting, that he may have left a bike in Cuba. That reminds me of a funny story I read about Floyd Landis' BMC mountain bike that randomly turned up with a guy who claimed he found it abandoned at a truck stop. Google that one!
